Freshman Defensive End Tyreke Smith Latest to Lose Black Stripe

Tyreke Smith Ohio State Football Buckeyes

There is a new official member of the Ohio State football team. Following Saturday’s final scrimmage, freshman defensive end Tyreke Smith had his black stripe removed.

Smith, out of Cleveland Heights, enrolled this summer for the Buckeyes. As a senior in 2017, he tallied 70 tackles, 23 tackles for loss, and 11 sacks.

Smith enters a depth chart that has room and a role for a freshman defensive end. He is one of four defensive ends signed by the Buckeyes in the 2018 recruiting class, but he is the first to have his black stripe removed.

One of the highest-rated members of the 2018 recruiting class, Smith arrived at Ohio State with very high expectations and a comparison to former Big Ten Defensive Lineman of the Year Tyquan Lewis.

“I think he is a clone [of Tyquan Lewis],” defensive line coach Larry Johnson said of Smith this spring. “That’s what we looked for. Good basketball player, good feet, good movement skills, really smart. I think he ceiling is very high.”

That ceiling hasn’t dropped any during fall camp.
