Buckeyes Have Experience in Abundance in Preparing for Navy
By Patrick Murphy
COLUMBUS — It will not be news to anyone that follows college football when Navy runs their triple-option wishbone offense on Saturday against Ohio State. It should also not be a surprise if they have some success against the Buckeyes because of the uniqueness of the offense.

“The triple option schemes that they run are unique and different to anybody else we’re going to play on the schedule,” co-defensive coordinator Chris Ash said.

“You could go four or five years and never play a team like that and to be able to get the defense ready for two different styles of offense is a challenge.”

The idea is to give the service academy a schematic advantage over schools with bigger, stronger, and faster players — like Ohio State.

As Eric Seger has pointed out, Ohio State has experience with the triple option in co-defensive coordinator and linebacker coach Luke Fickell and co-offensive coordinator and offensive line coach Ed Warinner.

Fickell held his same position in 2009 when the Buckeyes took on Navy in the opening game of the season. That game required an interception return on a two-point conversion by Brian Rolle to secure the win and Fickell is using this as a teaching tool.

“Yeah, coach brings it up to us every day,” linebacker Curtis Grant said of the 31-27 OSU win.

Warinner is the most experienced in preparing for Navy’s offense, having seen them live multiple times throughout his coaching career.

“I was at Air Force, that's Air Force's rival as well,” he told reporters.

“So I coached at two places [Army and Air Force] where Navy was a rival and Notre Dame plays them as well so I've coached against them. This will be the 19th time."

Fickell and Warinner aren’t the only members of the OSU staff to have dealt with Navy and the other service academies. Head coach Urban Meyer was the wide receivers coach at Notre Dame from 1996-2000 and played Navy each of those years.
