Building Ohio State's #Supreme18: Defensive Backs
By Ben van Ooyen
The Buckeyes have moved on from #Select17 to #Supreme18.

Today we start a look at each position group for the recruiting class of 2018 and who the Buckeyes have offered and where their recruitment stands as of right now. We are going to start on the defensive side of the ball because everyone usually starts on offense and I wanted to be different.

The defensive back haul of 2017 might go down as one of the greatest of all time at Ohio State, as they added playmakers who should make a difference right out of the gate. While I don’t expect the class of 2018 to come even remotely close in terms of numbers, there will still be quite a bit of talent hitting Columbus in two years.

As of today the Buckeyes have one commitment from this position group, Jaiden Woodbey, a 4-star safety out of California who committed last month. While his recruitment is far from over, he has made it clear that he is 100% committed to the Buckeye program (for now). Let’s take a look at who else is on the Buckeye Big Board for the defensive backs and who has committed elsewhere so far.

Houston Griffith - 4-Star - CB - Bradenton, Florida

Right now Griffith is a 71% crystal ball projection for the Buckeyes, and I currently think he ends up in this OSU class. Griffith is the son of Big Ten analyst Howard Griffith, an Illinois alum. He currently holds 34 offers to date and recently visited Florida State. However according to Griffith, he says that the Buckeyes and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish are the two teams at the top of his list right now. Griffith is the only current defensive back or safety that has any crystal ball projections for the Buckeyes so far, however that will change over the coming months.

Anthony Cook - 5-Star - CB - Lamar, Texas

Cook is the highest-rated target on the Buckeye recruiting board, and although he has projections to stay down south at either LSU or Texas, the Buckeyes can certainly sell him on the opportunity to come in and develop into an NFL first rounder. At the rate the Buckeyes are bringing kids in, they are just as fast at turning them around to the NFL. Who would have thought that Marshon Lattimore and Malik Hooker would only play one season and be projected Top 10 picks in the 2017 Draft?

B.J. Foster - 5-Star - S - Angelton, Texas

The top safety on the Buckeye recruiting board is B.J. Foster out of the state of Texas. Foster has 26 offers to date and right now holds a 100% crystal ball projection to the in-state Longhorns. The Buckeyes certainly have an uphill battle if they want to get in the mix for Foster, as it seems that Tom Herman is trying to regain the stronghold on the in-state talent that got away last year. While Texas seems like the team out in front right now, don’t count out the Buckeyes as I said above with Cook. The ability to produce NFL talent does not go unnoticed by these kids.

Tyreke Johnson - 5-Star - S - Jacksonville, Florida

The Buckeyes landed 5-star defensive back Shaun Wade out of Trinity Christian Academy last year, and they are hoping they can dip back in this year and secure another 5-star talent in Tyreke Johnson. Johnson lists 25 offers currently and is coming off a visit to in-state program Miami (FL). Right now his crystal ball projection is heavily in favor of the Florida State Seminoles, but he also has one for UCLA and Florida as well. I expect this recruitment to go on for quite a while, much like the Wade saga from last year.

Brendan Radley-Hiles - 4-Star - CB - Bradenton, Florida

Hiles was once a teammate of current Buckeyes Tate Martell and Haskell Garrett at Bishop Gorman, but has since decided to transfer and become a member of the IMG Academy down in Florida. Hiles right now has a 70% crystal ball projection to join another former teammate in Tyjon Lindsey at Nebraska. He has taken three trips to Ohio State already, so the interest is certainly there, I just don’t see him ending up in Columbus.

Amari Burney - 4-Star - S - Clearwater, Florida

Burney is a target the Buckeyes would love to steal out of the Sunshine State, however it is going to be a tough pull. He visited Ohio State last summer, and that was followed up with a visit from Greg Schiano back in January. He is currently 100% crystal ball projected to attend the University of Florida. If we were doing the hat game today, the Buckeye hat would be on the table, but I believe Florida would be the choice.

Asante Samuel Jr - 4-Star - CB - Ft. Lauderdale, Florida

If you remember back to the early 2000’s, you remember Asante Samuel roaming the field for the Super Bowl Patriots, and now his son is about to enter college as one of the best athletes in the country. Samuel recently released his top six schools and the Buckeyes made the list as the only team from the North to receive his consideration. It is likely that he ends up playing his college ball down in Florida, but he knows that the Buckeyes have what it takes to put him in the NFL. If Ohio State can get him on campus for a visit, then we can reevaluate this scenario.
