Today the Buckeye recruiting class added its first member from the state of Ohio when 4-star running back Jaelen Gill selected Ohio State in a ceremony at Westerville South High School. Gill selected the Buckeyes over offers from Michigan, UCLA, Notre Dame, Tennessee, Oklahoma, and Penn State, among others.

All of the major recruiting services have Gill rated as a 4-star prospect, with Rivals and 247Sports making him the No. 1 all-purpose back in the country in 2018. Gill is rated as the No. 30 overall prospect in the class of 2018 in the 247Sports Composite rankings.

He joins fellow running back Brian Snead, quarterback Emory Jones, and safety Jaiden Woodbey as the fourth member of the class of 2018. Gill becomes the third top 50 prospect to commit to the Buckeyes.

Gill suffered an early-season leg injury that kept him out of his junior campaign, which might have had some college programs reassess him. However, that injury was never an issue with Ohio State, and it was always a priority for the Buckeyes to get Gill to stay home and play in Columbus. He made multiple trips to Ohio State’s campus, including visits for Ohio State’s Junior Day, as well as the Nebraska game last season.

He is a two-sport star at Westerville, playing both football and baseball for the Wildcats, and he even had interest from several programs about playing both at the next level. With his commitment to the Buckeye football program, his passion for baseball will likely take a bit of a backseat for now.

As Gill becomes the second running back in the class of 2018, the question becomes whether Ohio State will continue to pursue running backs Iverson Clement, Tavion Thomas and others to fill a somewhat scarce depth chart heading into 2018. Despite already having two running backs in the class, however, expect them to take at least one more -- if not two -- to round out the class.

You can check out Jaelen Gill's sophomore highlights below.

We’ll have more on Gill’s commitment throughout the week.
