Buckeyes Win 1-0 Over Indiana
OSU moves into tie for league lead with winover Hoosiers
By John Porentas
Four Buckeye pitchers combined to limit Indiana to one run on seven hits, and right fielder Patrick Porter delivered a two-out triple to drive in the winning run and pace OSU to a win in game one of their three-game series with the No. 21 Hoosiers.
Indiana came into the series with a slim one-game lead over OSU, Nebraska and Minnesota. The OSU win, coupled with Minnesota's loss to Illinois and Nebraska's loss to Michigan, moves OSU into a two-way tie for first with the Hoosiers. Just two games remain on the schedule for all four teams still in contention for the top spots in the league standings.
Buckeye starter Brad Goldberg went six innings and allowed one run on four hits, but Goldberg walked in a run in the sixth inning to tie the game at 1-1. The Buckeyes had taken a slim 1-0 lead in the fourth inning on a two-out RBI single by designated hitter Zach Ratcliff.
The score remained tied until the bottom of the seventh when Porter produced his heroics to drive in the game-winning run.
The two teams will wind up their series with single games on Friday and Saturday. A win in either of those games will give OSU at least a share of the Big Ten title and assure them of a bye in the upcoming Big Ten tournament.
The win over the No. 21 Hoosiers was particularly satisfying for OSU Head Coach Greg Beals. OSU has recently lost 5 of 6 to ranked teams in non-conference play, most of which were tightly contested games. Beals said OSU's experience in those games helped his team to victory of the Hoosiers.
“Every at-bat and extra base had value," said Beals.
"We went through our gauntlet against very quality competition over the last six games and we felt prepared for this weekend. Our whole team was ready and it was good to open the series with a win.”
