Buckeyes Sweep Big Ten Road Opener, Look For Same Success at Home
By Andrew Lind

COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Ohio State baseball team returns home to Nick Swisher Field at Bill Davis Stadium this weekend to face the Michigan State Spartans. Coming off their first road sweep in four years, the Buckeyes look to improve upon their 15-6 (3-0 Big Ten) record.

The Buckeyes were supposed to have two midweek games this week, one at home against the Toledo Rockets and the other on the road against the Ohio Bobcats. Due to inclement weather, both games were cancelled. No makeup date has been announced for either contest.

With the cancellations, Ohio State is expected to go with their typical pitching routine of Jaron Long, Brad Goldberg and Brian King for this weekend’s three-game set against the Spartans (13-7). The trio combined to throw 21 innings, allowing only two earned runs against the defending Big Ten Champion Purdue Boilermakers last weekend in West Lafayette.

The pitching staff, which averages over six innings per start, lowered its season earned run average to 2.07 through 21 games. They allowed the Boilermakers to hit a measly .144 over the weekend.

Another bright spot for the Buckeyes has been the play of shortstop Kirby Pellant. A senior from Chandler, Ariz., Pellant went 6 for 9 in the series against Purde, with a double, homerun and seven runners batted in.

His play against the Boilermakers garnered him Big Ten Player of the Week Honors.

This weekend, the Michigan State Spartans travel to Columbus for a three-game set at Bill Davis Stadium. The Spartans come into the game having won seven straight games.  Just like Buckeyes, the pitching staff is the motor that keeps the wheels turning for the Spartan.

Junior Chase Rihtarchik earned Big Ten Pitcher of the Week for his complete game, no hitter against the Oakland Grizzlies. Senior Andrew Waszak and sophomore Mick VanVossen will most likely be the other starters this weekend for the Spartans. All three are capable of shutting down the Buckeyes, with Rihtarchik and Waszak both coming off complete games against the Grizzlies.

First pitch for the weekend contests are scheduled for 6:35 p.m. ET on Friday, 3:05 p.m. on Saturday, and 1:05 p.m. on Sunday.
