December 28, 2008 4;15 PM MT (Scottsdale, Az)

Men's Basketball: In a terse press release earlier today the Department of Athletics announced that OSU freshman point guard Anthony Crater is leaving the program. The release from OSU read as follows:

Anthony Crater, a freshman from Flint, Mich., asked for and was granted a release from his Ohio State men’s basketball scholarship, Thad Matta, head coach of the Buckeyes, announced Sunday.

Crater appeared in all 10 Ohio State games this season. The 6-foot-1-inch guard scored 12 points (1.2 ppg.) and handed out 19 assists for the 9-1 Buckeyes. He averaged 13.1 minutes per game.

Matta did not know Crater’s future plans.

“We appreciate the contribution Anthony made to our program,” Matta said. “We wish him the best.”

Crater came to OSU a highly-rated point guard who did not earn a starting spot as many expected he would. His AAU coach earlier today told Bob Baptist of the Columbus Dispatch that Crater was unhappy with his playing time and decided to move on.

This has been a very bad two week period for the Buckeyes. They lost David Lighty to injury, suffered an embarrassing lopsided loss to West Virginia, their first of the season yesterday, and now have lost Crater. The loss of Crater leaves OSU woefully thin at the guard positions, particularly point guard, where only Jeremie Simmons is listed at that position. Freshman Walter Offut is likely to see more playing time now with the departure of Crater.

OSU Men's BasketballDecember 27, 2008 11:10 PM

Football: OSU Head Coach Jim Tressel said today that freshman defensive end Nathan Williams will make the trip to Arizona with the Buckeyes for the Fiesta Bowl. Williams status was in some doubt due to his involvement in a shop lifting incident recently. According to Tressel, it is yet to be determined as to whether Williams will play in the game.

Tressel also reported that six OSU underclassmen have filed papers for NFL evaluation. They are wide receiver Brian Hartline, safety Kurt Coleman, safety Anderson Russell, tight end Jake Ballard, offensive lineman Jim Cordle and corner back Donald Washington. Tressel also added that he advised Beanie Wells that there was no need for an evaluation since his talent level and the interest level from the NFL is obvious.

James Laurinaitis

Football: After winning the Nagurski Award in 2006, then the Butkus in 2007, OSU senior linebacker James Laurinaitis will have to make room in the trophy case for one more award.

The Pacific Club in Newport, California, has awarded Laurinaitis the Lott Award as college football's impact player of the year. Laurinaitis is the only two-time finalist for the award and was selected over Texas defensive end Brian Orakpo, Florida State defensive back Myron Rolle and Wake Forest linebacker Aaron Curry.

"This is so surprising to me, but such a tremendous honor. I have to thank my Lord Jesus Christ for all the amazing blessings he has sent me and this is such a blessing," said Laurinaitis.

"Knowing what this award stands for and knowing the reputation and character of Mr. Lott makes it very special. Hearing Keith Jackson announce my name is something I will never forget. It’s a credit to all my Ohio State teammates and an amazing honor. This is truly overwhelming."

Football: Ohio State senior middle linebacker James Laurinaitis and senior defensive back Malcolm Jenkins have been named to the first team of the American Football Coaches Association All-American Team.

The AFCA Coaches All-American team has been selected since 1945 and is the only All-American team selected by the coaches themselves.

Ohio State is second only to Oklahoma in the number of players who have been named to the AFCA All-American team through the years. A total of 42 Buckeyes have amassed 56 mentions. Only Oklahoma has more with 59 mentions by 51 different players. The Big 12 has the most mentions all time with 244 followed by the Big 10 with 239 representatives.
