Terrelle Pryor Report Three
By John Porentas
OSU's open practice yesterday afforded the first opportunity to see Terrelle Pryor in action against a college defense. The bad news is that the action was pretty limited, not just for Pryor, but for everyone on the roster.
Pryor took part in a practice that was about as bland as bland could be. All three quarterbacks wore black no-contact jerseys, there was little to almost no contact, and there was almost no 11-on-11 activity.
The no-contact jersey took away any chance to see Pryor as a runner, but there were some very evident things about him as a passer.
First, his mechanics look good. We never saw him in high school, but are told that his delivery was sidearm. It is definitely over the top now, and he looks very good throwing. His arm seems lively and he delivers the ball with zip on it.
The one word that comes to mind after our first glimpse of Pryor is confident. He seems confident in the pocket and does not exhibit any happy feet at all. He also seems very confident in his arm. He did not hesitate to hum the ball out there and squeeze it into small openings between defenders to get it to his receiver. If anything, he may have been just a tad too aggressive about throwing it, but that may have been a function of the drill being done, particularly in view of the black, no-contact jersey.
Much of the passing work was focused on goal line going in situations. In fact, that occupied almost the entire seven-on-seven drill time. The line of scrimmage was about the 13-yard line, so there was very little opportunity to see Pryor's arm strength or ability to throw the deep ball. There was one memorable ball later in the practice where Pryor zipped one about 30 yards downfield toward a receiver streaking down the sideline. The pass was incomplete, but Pryor showed both the confidence to attempt to squeeze the ball between the corner and safety and the arm to get it out to the receiver quickly before the safety could close down.
