Buckeyes Without DE Nathan Williams, Two Special Teamers vs. Indiana
By Brandon Castel
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — Ohio State has confirmed a season-ending injury for freshman cornerback Najee Murray, and the Buckeyes will also be without starting defensive end Nathan Williams and backup cornerback Armani Reeves against Indiana tonight.
According to sources close to the program, Murray suffered a torn ACL during Sunday’s scrimmage between Ohio State’s backup players. Reeves did not make the trip to Bloomington because of an ankle injury and Williams missed practice this week with a concussion.
Murray and Reeves were both key players on Ohio State’s kick coverage team, nicknamed the Piranhas by cornerbacks coach Kerry Coombs, but the loss of Williams is obviously the big one for the Buckeyes.
The fifth-year senior missed most of last season with a knee injury, but has been a key factor for the Buckeyes on the defensive line this year after making an incredible return from microfracture surgery.
He has 19 tackles, a sack and 1.5 tackles for loss in five games this year, but Williams has been incredibly active off the edge. He had a number of hurries last week against Nebraska quarterback Taylor Martinez, and was really just starting to get his legs back under him after missing an entire year with the knee injury.
Williams did not make the trip to Bloomington, which leaves the Buckeyes even more short-handed on the defensive side of the ball. Coordinator Luke Fickell is already without senior linebacker Etienne Sabino, who cracked his fibula in the first half of Ohio State’s win over Nebraska.
Sources close to the team indicated to The-Ozone that senior fullback Zach Boren will play some linebacker for the Buckeyes against the Hoosiers tonight. He practiced at middle linebacker during the week could be asked to play both ways for the first time in his collegiate career.
New Number for Reed
Ohio State also announced that wideout Verlon Reed has changed his number from 9 to 8 following the departure of receiver Ricquan Southward. The freshman out of Lakeland, Fla. recently left the team for personal reasons shortly after head coach Urban Meyer announced that receiver Tyrone Williams had been dismissed from the program.
Reed has one catch for 13 yards this season after missing half of last season with a torn ACL suffered during the onside kick attempt against Michigan State.
