Two-Minute Drill: Buckeyes Survive Bloody Tuesday

By Brandon Castel

COLUMBUS — It may not have been a true representation of how gruesome an ugly Urban Meyer practice can be, but the Buckeyes made it through their first ‘Bloody Tuesday’ without much, well, bloodshed.

Tailback Carlos Hyde said Monday’s practice was actually, describing it as a “camp practice” rather than a game-week practice. Meyer’s plan is to push his team hard early in the week and let them rest at the back end heading into the game.

Here are some more updates from Tuesday’s practice.

Personnel Updates

* DE Nathan Williams has been out there this week, but he's mostly limited. Training staff easing him back slowly.

* Howard said he can tell Williams is anxious to get back on the field, but he hasn't been tackling any team managers or anything.

* Hyde said he finally feels like THE running back at Ohio State but knows there is always competition every day.

* Hyde said competition for the backup spot was close, but Bri'onte Dunn really learned everything quickly and gives his all every day.

* Hyde hasn’t seen a change in Rod Smith since the depth chart came out. Still working hard out there and competing.

* Three more OSU freshmen had their black stripes removed today: CB Armani Reeves, FB Craig Cataline (Grandview) and LB Craig Fada (Watterson).

Offensive Notes

* Howard said WR Philly Brown has blossomed into THE playmaker for the offense this fall. They try to get him the ball as much as possible

* Braxton Miller said he’s eager to get his black jersey off, but he's making better reads now because he wasn't allowed to run.

* Miller said he expects to throw between 18 to 20 passes for an ideal game. Seems low to me, but they want to run the ball.

* Hyde said it was incredibly frustrating to be a part of the offense last year. Just felt like they couldn't do anything positive.

* Braxton said he was never really able to get comfortable in the offense last year until the end of the season.

* Hyde said the new mentality is all about playing fast, scoring points and having fun while taking care of the football.

* Their goal is to score as early and as often as possible and to keep their foot on the opponent's throat for four quarters.

* Hyde said the offense has a completely different level of confidence this year and it comes from Meyer. He believes in them.

Defensive Notes

* Howard said he wasn't lazy last year, but he wasn't always focused. Would drift in and out.

* Howard told me he's really thankful Urban Meyer became the head coach at Ohio State. Feels like Meyer did get the best out of him and feels he will be a much better player this year.

* Howard is really excited to see the defense on Saturday, but also to see the offense. Sounded very excited about what they could do.
