Urban Meyer: ‘Let's beat the Sh*t out of Michigan’
By Brandon Castel
Think Saturday’s game against Michigan doesn’t mean something a little (or a lot) extra to Urban Meyer? Think again.
Ohio State’s head coach has been pretty good about downplaying the importance of this game for him personally, but anyone who knows Meyer or has been around him for more than five minutes could tell he wants this one, bad.
Not just because it’s ‘the big one,’ but also because it’s the final time he will ever coach seniors like John Simon, Etienne Sabino, Zach Boren and Nathan Williams. The emotion of the moment finally got to Meyer on Friday during his appearance at Earle Bruce's Beat Michigan Tailgate to benefit Alzheimer's research.
Meyer said he made a promise to the Ohio State seniors that if they gave everything they had we would make it a special year for them.
“As a result of that blind faith, and giving us their hearts, they’re about to embark – if they can get this done – on one of the most memorable seasons in Ohio State history,” Meyer said with his voice cracking a bit.
“So with that said, I’d like to make sure we all give credit to where credit is due…”
His voice trailed off.
“Meyer had to pause for a full minute while talking about the seniors and the special day they deserve tomorrow. He couldn't get the words out,” said Ozone contributor Jeff Rapp, who was on hand for the pep rally, which took place at Ohio State’s French Field House Friday afternoon.
“Meyer fought tears so hard he banged his glasses on the side of the lectern trying to compose himself. Earle came over and gave comfort.”
Meyer finally composed himself enough to continue.
“I just want to make sure that we always remember these seniors, this senior class,” he said, his voice still shaky.
“There’s reasons why you do what you do. These kids love this school, they love each other and we can’t forget that. Let’s beat the shit out of Michigan. Have a good night.”
With that, the crowd erupted, the band began to play and the rivalry was official on.
