Ohio State Confirms “Special Nike Uniforms” for Michigan Game
By Brandon Castel
COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Ohio State University announced Monday the team will wear “special Nike uniforms” for the Michigan game on Saturday.
This confirms previously published reports on The-Ozone about a “rivalry” uniform, which according to Ohio State, will "hint back to" the uniform style worn by the Buckeyes back in 1967, and more famously in 1968.
That ’68 team, which featured 11 All-Americans and six first-round NFL draft picks, was one of the most famous, not to mention talented, in school history. Led by quarterback Rex Kern and the “Super Sophs,” the Buckeyes went 10-0 that season under legendary coach Woody Hayes, with victories over No. 1-ranked Purdue, No. 4-ranked Michigan and No. 2-ranked USC.
According to Ohio State, these alternate uniforms – which replaced Nike’s Pro Combat line – will feature Scarlet jerseys with large gray numbers on front and back of the jersey and most noticeably on the shoulder pads.
There will be a black stripe around the jersey sleeves and seven Buckeye leaves along the back collar to represent Ohio State’s seven Heisman Trophies and seven national championships.
The jerseys will have a Block “O” logo on the front collar and the gray pants will feature a wider piping down the sides. The helmets will also feature a wider scarlet, white and black stripe on a dull chrome surface.
This marks the third time in four years the Buckeyes have worn alternate jerseys for ‘The Game.’ They wore Pro Combat “throwbacks” against Michigan in 2009 and 2010.
The Buckeyes will unveil this year’s alternate uniform at a “Beat Blue” pep rally this evening at the Ohio Union on High Street in Columbus. We will have full video and photo coverage of the unveiling some time later this evening.
Celebrate Good Times
Ohio State also confirmed on Monday that the University will honor the 2002 National Championship team between the first and second quarters of the Michigan game on Saturday at Ohio Stadium.
It will be Senior Day in Columbus, and former OSU head coach Jim Tressel expected to be among those from the ’02 championship who will receive recognition during the game.
