Buckeyes Sending Simon, Two Others to Chicago

By Brandon Castel

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio State will send seniors John Simon, Zach Boren and Etienne Sabino to Chicago later this month for the 41st Annual Kickoff Luncheon.

Three players will represent each school in the Big Ten, and while it is typically a role for seniors, the Buckeyes did send fourth-year junior Orhian Johnson last year.

They also sent seniors Andrew Sweat and Michael Brewster. It’s possible Urban Meyer would have sent fifth-year senior Jake Stoneburner, or even fourth-year junior Jack Mewhort to Chicago this year had they not been arrested earlier this summer.

The one player almost guaranteed to be there was Simon. If he had been left off the list--the way someone like Tyler Moeller was a year ago—it would have been one of the major shockers of the event, considering Meyer’s newfound affection for his star defensive end.

Simon was recently named as a preseason candidate for both the Lott IMPACT Award and Bednarik Award. He is considered to be one of the top returning defensive players in the Big Ten, and it’s almost a lock that he will be named a team captain in the fall.

It would not be surprising to see Boren also serving in that role this season, and the Buckeyes dealt with so much turmoil amongst the senior class a year ago. Meyer has also expressed affection for Boren, who will even get to carry the ball in Ohio State’s new offense this fall.

Sabino is a bit of a surprise, if only because he took a voluntary redshirt in 2010 in order to learn the system better and create some separation between himself and other guys in his class.

After starting five games at linebacker a year ago, the Miami native will open the 2012 season as Ohio State’s starting Sam (strongside) linebacker. He was the team’s defensive MVP the TaxSlayer.com Gator Bowl with four tackles, including two tackles-for-loss.

Along with his three seniors, Meyer will also be in Chicago for the Kickoff Luncheon, which takes place July 26-27 at the Hyatt Regency McCormick Place and McCormick Place Convention Center in downtown Chicago.
