Eight Players to Serve as Captains
By Rob Odgen

Ohio State announced on Tuesday that eight players will serve as captains for the 2013 football team.

Those eight players are senior left tackle Jack Mewhort, junior quarterback Braxton Miller, junior linebacker Ryan Shazier, senior safety C.J. Barnett, senior safety Christian Bryant, senior receiver Corey Brown, senior quarterback Kenny Guiton and senior center Corey Linsley.

Coach Urban Meyer said these eight players will be called "game captains" and a select few of the eight will be recognized at the end of the season as the team's official captains.

The captains were decided by player vote.

“It’s the first time I’ve done something like this,” Meyer said in a release.

“We had eight individuals receive a lot of votes, and all were within 12 votes of each other. So they’ll lead us into each game as captains and at the end of the year a decision will be made as to who will be the season’s captains.”

Last year, the Buckeyes had five captains, one of which was running back Jordan Hall. Even with eight captains this year, Hall wasn't re-elected to the group.

Previously, the most amount of captains ever had by Ohio State was six, in 2010. But Meyer is used to having a lot of captains. In 2008, Florida used 11 different players as captains.

With both Miller and Shazier, Ohio State has two junior captains for the first time since 2000, when Joe Cooper and Steve Bellisari were captains.

Miller and Guiton are the first quarterbacks to be named captain since Todd Boeckman in 2008.

The vote took place on Monday, and Meyer said Tuesday afternoon that captains would not be announced until Wednesday or Thursday.
