What They're Saying: The Dontre Wilson Clearinghouse of Raves
By Tony Gerdeman

COLUMBUS, Ohio — In the constantly-moving world of covering Ohio State football, we can't just focus on one topic and beat it into the ground like a certain worldwide leader does with certain quarterbacks who shall remain unnamed. We actually have to move on and cover as much territory as we can.

That being said, there's still a whole lot more that we could've written about freshman Dontre Wilson. His teammates have talked about him plenty, but we haven't been able to use it all. So in an effort to gather all of that unused adulation in one spot, we have created the Dontre Wilson Clearinghouse of Raves. Enjoy.

Excited to get Wilson the football?
"Ab-so-lute-ly! Definitely! He's a special kid. He goes all out. You can tell from that first day of camp, he was like a bolt of lightning. Now he's kind of slowing down, he had to get used to that college life."

Ezekial Elliot

Your thoughts on Wilson?
"I've seen him in camp. Dontre is a very good athlete. He's very quick, I really haven't seen anything like it. I don't know how he just moves in and out of places. He's so quick and his legs just keep going. He's a very impressive athlete."

What have you seen from Wilson?

"One thing about Dontre that you saw on film coming from high school was the speed factor and him playing in space, the ability to make people miss, the ability to explode and create explosive long-yardage plays. He's doing phenomenally. What's surprising is that he's bringing a little bit of maturity with him on the football field. Now he's got a long way to go as far as development and maturity, but on the field he's there and he seems like he's ready to play. An unbelievable addition to this football team."

How has Wilson been in the return game?
"He's a lot of fun. Last year, we didn't know at this time who was going to run the ball back. We didn't know what kind of guys we had. We knew we had Philly and we knew had Devin, but right now we've got an abundance of guys in that back line that we think have the chance to score when they touch the ball. It's really exciting."

Which young guys are standing out?
“There's a lot of young guys that I see great potential in, but as far as who is standing out the most to me is little Wilson, the little speedster. You've gotta catch him. You think you have a hard time trying to catch Braxton, but you've gotta catch him too. You're gonna have to be on a swivel for both of them."

Vonn Bell

Your thoughts on Wilson?
"He's gonna work hard. We're gonna challenge each other. We’re gonna pick a brother up. It’s an explosive offense we’ve got here, so we’re gonna try to make an explosive defense as well."

Philly Brown

Who is standing out?
"You look at Dontre Wilson, he's playing real fast right now because he's not worried about making mistakes, which is good. He just gets it. Coach Meyer preaches every day about going hard, and Dontre is out there just running as fast as he can carefree, not worried about making mistakes, and that's how it should be. At the end of the day we can fix the mistakes and get him doing the right thing as long as he just continues to run fast and play fast he's going to be a good player."

Devin Smith

Can you describe Wilson?
"He's fast. He kind of reminds me of DeAnthony Thomas the way he's out there and just runs. When he catches the ball he just runs. He came in with that. That's something we need in this offense."

Everett Withers

Does Wilson catch your eye?
"Sure, no question. Any time a guy runs as fast as he does, it always catches your eye on defense. He's very talented. I think he's a skilled athlete, and he's a football player. You get some football players that are really fast, but they don't like being in that fray a lot. I think he's going to be one of those guys that doesn't mind the tackling. Doesn't mind taking a hit. I think he's a fearless runner, which if you can run that fast, you can do a lot of damage."

Zach Smith

What kind of player is Wilson?
"Dontre is a very talented guy. He's a running back really so that's kind of what he's built for and that's kind of how we're going to utilize him, but getting to work with him in the throw game also is beneficial for the team and you never don't enjoy a great talent."

Who's caught your eye on offense?
"Dontre, he’s a special player. Right now I feel like he has a lot of attributes he can bring to the team one of these days. Just being elusive, one of those elusive guys out there."
