Meyer, Buckeyes Keep Streaks Alive

Urban Meyer ended Ohio State's last winning streak of 19 games, so it only seems right that the coach got the Buckeyes back to 19 straight Saturday night with a 34-24 win over Iowa.
The now-19-game winning streak ties for the second longest in school history with the one the Buckeyes put together from 2006-to-2006. Meyer's Florida Gators halted that streak with a win over the Buckeyes in the 2006 BCS National Championship Game.
Saturday at Penn State, he'll have the chance to make amends.
If the Buckeyes reach 20 on Saturday, it will be the first 20-plus-game winning steak in school history since Ohio State won 22 straight from 1967-to-1969. That streak still stands as the school record.
Meyer was a toddler when that streak began, and he said Saturday he isn't worried about overtaking it.
"Some day I imagine when I'm an old guy sitting somewhere they'll say that's kind of cool," he said. "But right now it means I'm blessed to have a bunch of very good players and a bunch of great coaches."
A 20th-consecutive win would also tie for the second longest streak of Meyer's career. Twice before this season has Meyer led 20-game streaks. Taking into account Meyer's final victory at Florida (a 37-24 win over Penn State in the 2011 Outback Bowl), the coach's win streak is now at 20 games, making him the first coach in FBS history to have three winning streaks of 20 games or more.
Meyer is one of 41 FBS coaches to guide a team to a winning streak of at least 20 games.
But that's a stat Meyer doesn't want any of his players to get hold of.
"I wish I had our guys living on a desert island," he said, "because I don't want to hear anything else except going for win No. 8."
Junior lineman Joel Hale has taken his coach's mentality.
"You just gotta focus on the next game," Hale said. "That should be our goal every week. You can't look ahead, you can't look in the past. You gotta focus, starting tomorrow, on beating Penn State."
The last FBS team to record a streak of more than 20 games was Boise State, which held a 24-game winning streak in 2010.
The longest streak in FBS history is 47 games, set by Oklahoma from 1963-to-1957.
As a senior, Carlos Hyde wouldn't be around long enough to see the Buckeyes' current streak get past 26, and he was brief when he was asked about it.
"Keep it going," he said.
