ESPN Set to Air Three Ohio State Games in Prime Time
By Tony Gerdeman

ESPN announced their six-game prime time Big Ten football schedule on Monday afternoon, and the Buckeyes will be featured in three of those games.

The first will be September 28 when Ohio State kicks off its 2013 Big Ten Conference schedule against the Wisconsin Badgers in Ohio Stadium at 8 p.m. on either ABC, ESPN or ESPN2.

Then the very next week – October 5 – when Ohio State plays Northwestern for the first time in five years. The 8 p.m. game at Northwestern’s Ryan Field will be televised by either ABC, ESPN or ESPN2.

The final ESPN night game will take place on October 26 when Penn State comes to Columbus for an 8 p.m. kickoff against the Buckeyes that will be televised on either ABC, ESPN or ESPN2.

The other ESPN selections were Notre Dame at Michigan (8 p.m.) on September 7, Notre Dame at Purdue (8 p.m.) on September 14, and Michigan at Penn State (5 p.m.) on October 12.

With ESPN's six selections out of the way, the Big Ten will now select three games to air on the Big Ten Network. They will announce their selections next week. Last year, there were 14 Big Ten games played in prime time, so it is expected that the number will be similar this year.

Ohio State's game at California could end up on the FOX network, which could possibly end up in prime time as well. Currently, the only competition in that time slot is the aforementioned Notre Dame at Purdue game.

It is unlikely that the Big Ten Network puts any additional Ohio State games on in prime time, given their desire to spread the wealth among all conference members.

From the Ohio State media release:

This year marks the sixth consecutive season that Ohio Stadium will be host to a night game. Ohio State has played 12 night games previously in Ohio Stadium beginning with the first-ever home night game in 1985 against Pitt.

Ohio State has played a total of 59 night games (those starting after 5 p.m. local time) and has an official night game record of 36-20. The Buckeyes are 8-3 in home night games, 19-10 in away night games and 9-7 at neutral sites. (All records reflect vacated night game wins in 2010: Marshall, at Minnesota and vs. Arkansas).
