Buckeyes Do Not Lead in Apathy Bowl
By John Porentas

As it says on the front page of the-Ozone, we goofed.

Last night we published an article claiming that Orange Bowl tickets were selling for 4.00 dollars on StubHub. We have now learned that is not true.

The source of our error is a misunderstanding of information posted on StubHub which we cited in the original article. In it, we said that StubHub was reporting tickets for sale for 4.00 dollars. Our reason for making that statement is pasted below.

That is what we saw on StubHub and made the crazy assumption that they were selling game tickets. The category is, after all, Orange Bowl Tickets, and the game date is correct.

What fools.

A reader suggested that we filter for price at 4.00 on StubHub to find out what those 4.00 tickets were for. We did that, and found out that they were for something called "FanZone". There was nothing that we could find on the StubHub site about "FanZone", so we opened a chat with a StubHub rep. Below is the transcript of the chat which was emailed to us.

Hi this is Robert H. with StubHub Inside Sales and thanks for allowing me to chat with you today. May I please have the event name that you are interested in, the date that it's taking place and how I can assist you with that?

Customer: I am looking at the OSU vs. Clemson game. What is the 4.00 ticket for "FanZone"?

Robert H.: Thanks for chatting in. I'm happy to assist you.

Robert H.: Do you mind waiting a moment while I look into this for you?

Customer: Sure, go ahead.

Robert H.: Thank you!

[Editor's Note: Very long pause here.]

Robert H.: The FanZone is not an entry to the game. It is an event prior to the Orange Bowl which is why it's not located on the venue map.

Customer: I think it is a bit misleading to list that event with game tickets. Is that standard procedure on StubHub? It's rather confusing..

Robert H.: We typically have a separate event listing for this, but it does not seem to be on the website.

Robert H.: I apologize for the confusion! We typically have a separate event to prevent that, but there does not seem to be one listed at this time.

Customer: I see. Well thank you. That clears some things up for me. Is it safe to say that under normal circumstances a listing for game tickets would be only for game tickets, but this is somewhat of an anomaly?

Robert H.: Correct! Like I said, I was pretty surprised to have no been able to find a separate event listing for this.

Customer: Thanks, you've been a big help.

Robert H.: You're very welcome! Is there anything else that we can assist with?

Customer: No, that will do it. Thanks

Robert H.: Thank you for choosing StubHub!
Thanks for using Live Chat. You may now close this window.

So there you have it. I suppose it can be argued we were lax in actually taking at face value what was listed on StubHub, but to be honest, we were completely blind sided by this.We thought we could trust StubHub to be accurate in their listing, and after all this is a report about their listing. But as their salesperson Robert H. said, there was an error made in that the pregame event was improperly listed with the game tickets. If this makes any sense at all, our mistake was not assuming they had made that error, which makes us buffoons at worst I suppose. At best, we were victims of misleading information posted by StubHub.

So to all of you who are sure we are savages who were out to embarrass the Buckeyes, Mea Culpa. The mistake was in believing what we saw, but no ill will was intended. Mea Culpa

To all of you who wrote and said we had purposely lied for some sinister yet unidentifiable reason, Mea Culpa, but why would anybody lie in a report about what they saw on a web site? You can still go see it. It would be dumb thing to lie about, but still, Mea Culpa.

And to all of you have never studied latin, Mea Culpa means "Help, my cheese is on fire," which is the loose translation of the the greek word "Hoopa" which is yelled when they light the saganaki and is the indirect derivation of the phrase "Mea Culpa". (OK, most of that was an actual lie provided as a public service so those with some left over venom will have something use it on.)

The amended the ticket price chart is now just below and the Buckeye game has been moved up to its rightful seventh position on the chart. We're going to place a horizontal rule across the page after the chart. For those who didn't see the original article and would like to do so, it is what appears below the horizontal rule.

That will also preserve the comments originally made when the article first appeared.

Mea Culpa.

It took just one loss for fan support for the Urban Meyer led Buckeyes to revert from unbridled enthusiasm to outright apathy.

A check of StubHub at 7:45 PM on December 9 showed that tickets for the Orange Bowl were not only the lowest priced of all the BCS games, but also the lowest price of all bowl games involving a Big Ten team.

Before we get into the price for Orange Bowl tickets, consider that tickets for the Texas Bowl featuring Minnesota and Syracuse are currently bringing 11.00.

That's right, the OSU vs. Clemson game is somewhere south of 11.00.

The top BCS game right now is the National championship game with Stub Hub showing 3,943 tickets available starting at 526 dollars.

The Rose with Michigan State and Stanford is a distant second with 1,345 tickets offered at a starting price of 259.

To find the price for OSU tix, check the bottom of the chart below showing the Stub Hub prices as of 7:45 PM tonight.
