Depth Chart Commentary
By Rob Ogden

Ohio State coach Urban Meyer loves competition. Everyone has to earn their spot, he likes to say. So it was no surprise to see that All-American cornerback Bradley Roby wasn't listed as the clear No. 1 at his  position on the team's updated depth chart.

Roby will rejoin the team this week after being suspended for the first game of the season. He might be the most talented player on the defense, but the spot won't just be handed to him.

"Right now the starting corner, until he gets beat out, is gonna be Armani (Reeves)," Meyer said, "It's the same thing we have with our rule on injuries, if someone comes in and plays well, he doesn't just lose his spot."

Reeves made his first-career start last Saturday against Buffalo in Roby's place. The sophomore had previously never played more than two snaps in a game, and defensive backs coach Kerry Coombs called Reeves' play "average".

This week's depth chart has the starting boundary cornerback listed as "Armani Reeves or Bradley Roby." Meyer said he likely won't make a decision until Thursday.

No matter who ends up getting the start, Meyer likes the competition.

"If there's competition, theres no complacency," he said. "Every coach wants to be three-deep at each position so everyday in practice those kids are going. If you don't have that then complacency can set in there."

Also returning from suspension this week will be junior running back Rod Smith. Even with Carlos Hyde still suspended, Smith didn't crack the top three at running back on the depth chart.

After Jordan Hall, the second-team spot is listed as Bri'onte Dunn or Warren Ball, despite the fact that Dunn didn't register a carry against Buffalo on Saturday.

At strong safety, senior captain C.J. Barnett is listed as a co-starter with senior Corey Brown. Barnett missed last weekend's game with an ankle sprain.

Meyer said Monday that he expects Barnett to return on Saturday.
