Spring Practice Insider: David Perkins One-Ups Rufus the Bobcat
By Tony Gerdeman

COLUMBUS, Ohio — On a day billed as "Student Appreciation Day", we must all appreciate the sacrifice that Brutus Buckeye made when given the chance to carry the football during Saturday's practice.

Never known for having the best vision, Brutus took a snap around the left side and ended up being annihilated by linebacker David Perkins. Standing behind the players on the sideline, we could only see Brutus's head running forward, and then it stopped. Violently. His head snapped back and he went to the ground.

The crowd exploded with "O"s, but this was no "O-H-I-O" chant. This was shocked empathy. You might remember Brutus being attacked by Ohio University's nefarious Bobcat "Rufus", but this was much, much worse.

Brutus took a moment to gather himself, but eventually walked off in his usual, confident manner. He then left the practice, no doubt to order a Charles Atlas bodybuilding book for his next run in with Perkins.

After the practice, Perkins said that he squared Brutus up perfectly, but he didn't think he hit him that hard. He said he thinks it looked worse than it was because of Brutus's oversized head.

Oversized head? How's that for adding insult to injury.

Coach Appreciation Day

Former head coaches Earle Bruce and John Cooper were both on hand today. Bruce was taking pictures with parents and students throughout the practice. Also in attendance was Ohio State University president Dr. E. Gordon Gee.

Injury Update

Linebacker Ryan Shazier was still in possession of his orange jersey and did not participate today because of the tremendous amount of scrimmaging that took place.

Defensive backs Najee Murray, Devan Bogard and Jamie Wood were all in orange jerseys as well.

David Perkins injured his lower leg and had to hobble off twice during practice, but both times he would return.

Unfair Labor Practices

Ohio State football practices are difficult enough as they are, and are made only more difficult for the second-team offensive line when they are pitted against the first-team defensive line.

Defensive end Noah Spence continues to be one of the most impressive defenders on the field, and against the second-team line, he ran right by Darryl Baldwin for a sack of Kenny Guiton.

Defensive tackle Michael Bennett had similar success fighting through the middle of the second unit for a sack as well. Guiton rarely had much time to drop back and survey the field against the number one defensive line.

Defensive end Adolphus Washington also shot through the attempted pass block of guard Tommy Brown for a sack.

Freshman Tracy Sprinkle had some success for the second-team defensive line, getting a sack through the middle of the first-team offensive line.

Movers and Shakers

Quite a few players got some looks with the first-team defense. Defensive tackle Chris Carter got some snaps with the ones. It was the continuation of a pretty good day for the big man. He had a nice hit in pursuit of tailback Warren Ball, who ran wide and then attempted to cut back. He cut back right into Carter's open arms.

Freshman cornerback Cameron Burrows also got some time with the ones as Bradley Roby continues to take a more cerebral role during the spring. Those reps for Burrows didn't come without their issues, as on one occasion safety C.J. Barnett had to yell several times at him to get lined up on the right side of the field.

Cornerback Armani Reeves was again with the first unit and he played very well. He had some lockdown coverage on Devin Smith one a couple of deep balls. Though he did also get flagged for pass interference against Smith.

Emptying the Notebook

* Linebacker Curtis Grant had a solid day in the middle for the Buckeyes. He had a sack on Braxton Miller and also stopped Warren Ball on a fourth down play.

* When David Perkins had to leave with an injury, sophomore middle linebacker Cam Williams took his place.

* Nickel back Tyvis Powell had some very solid hits today. It was the one that didn't happen, however, that probably would have told us the most about his progress. Braxton Miller got outside of the pocket and came to a one-on-one situation with Powell, but before anything could happen, they blew the play dead. Powell had him completely lined up, however.

* There were no significant changes with the depth chart from the last practice.
