Projected Post-Spring Depth Chart: Defense (Includes Incoming Freshmen)
By Brandon Castel

COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Buckeyes are the only team in Division I college football coming off an undefeated season , but the road to another year of perfection will be a little bit rockier without guys like John Simon and Johnathan Hankins on defense.

Ohio State’s defense got off to a slow start in 2013, but Luke Fickell’s group was playing at a high level by the end of the season. A big part of that was the addition of Zach Boren at middle linebacker, but the Buckeyes will have to replace more than just Boren this offseason.

The big storyline of spring ball on the defensive side of the football was the front seven, where the Buckeyes must replace six starters from last year’s team. That includes Boren, Etienne Sabino and all four starters on the defensive line.

Ryan Shazier and Bradley Roby did not practice much this spring, but that allowed guys like Doran Grant and Curtis Grant to shine in their absence. Both of the Grants seamed to lock down starting jobs in the spring, but Ohio State will have a new crop of reinforcements when Urban Meyer and his staff open camp in the fall.

Here’s a look at our projection of what Ohio State’s defensive depth chart looks like heading into a long three months of summer conditioning in Columbus.
