Pair of Buckeyes On Lott IMPACT Trophy Preseason Watch List
By Tony Gerdeman
Cornerback Bradley Roby and linebacker Ryan Shazier have been named to to the Lott IMPACT Trophy Preseason Watch List. The award, named after former college and NFL defensive great Ronnie Lott, goes annually to a defensive player, and is based equally on their athletic performance as well as their personal character.
Shazier led the Buckeyes last year with 115 tackles, and his 17.0 tackles for loss led the Big Ten. He was named First-Team All-Big Ten in 2012 by the media, and will be on various preseason All-American lists this season.

"I have goals in my head," Shazier said of the coming 2013 season.
"I'm not really going to tell you what they are, but I have goals in my head. I just want to do whatever to help this team make it to the next level. We're on a chase right now and we're trying to do whatever we can to get there."
Roby was named a First-Team All-American by ESPN last season, as well as First-Team All-Big Ten by both the coaches and the media. He led the nation in passes defended per game (1.73), and finished third on the team in tackles (63). His 41 solo tackles were good for second on the team.
"What I learned about Bradley through the course of the season that I didn't know in spring ball last year is how hard he works at studying the game," said OSU cornerbacks coach Kerry Coombs.

"He is a very intelligent player. He's gifted athletically, but that's not where it ends, that's where it begins. He has a great understanding of offense. He studies his opponent. He knows what's going on. He looks at formations, and he's making a plan. I don't think he had that thought process last year at this time, and now he does. Now he's trying to evaluate every play with 'How do I get the ball in my hands here?'"
The Lott IMPACT Trophy was established by The Pacific Club IMPACT Foundation, and was first awarded in 2004. Last season, Ohio State defensive end John Simon was named one of eight semi-finalists. Former Buckeye linebacker James Laurinaitis won the trophy in 2008. Notre Dame linebacker Manti Te'o won it last year.
Simon was named to the Watch List in 2012 and 2011, and former Buckeyes Ross Homan and Cameron Heyward were named to the list in 2010. Kurt Coleman was named to the preseason list in 2009.
Five other Big Ten players were named to the 2013 Preseason Watch List: Chris Borland, LB (Wisconsin); Max Bullough, LB (Michigan State); Ibraheim Campbell, S (Northwestern), James Morris, LB (Iowa); and Damien Proby, LB (Northwestern).
The winner will be named in December.
