Two-Minute Drill: Tuesday Post-Practice Updates From Urban Meyer
By Tony Gerdeman

COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Buckeyes took to the field on Tuesday for their ninth of 15 practices this spring. Afterward, Urban Meyer spent a few minutes speaking with the media.

TMDUrban Meyer Updates
+ Jeff Heuerman had surgery on his foot following a sprain last Thursday. He should be full speed by June. Meyer said that Heuerman didn't need many reps this spring, but it's still a loss.

+ Curtis Samuel had a "really good day today". He doesn't know which way is right or left yet, but he had a good day.

+ The defense got the better of the offense today.

+ Meyer said they have addressed the desire to have a blue collar defense and demanding and teaching the culture that they want on defense. "I don't know if I've ever addressed it as hard as I have this offseason."

+ Meyer said that he doesn't feel student-athletes are employees, but he does believe they should get more than they do. He said he thinks parents should be able to come on visits for free during recruiting trips.

+ Meyer said he thinks the 20-hour rule is a great rule. "Kids can decide just like coaches to be great." Players who want to be great will work on their own. He said coaches created the rule because if they made it 40 hours, they'd keep the players for 40 hours.

+ He said that young players are picking things up well, but didn't want to name names, then named Darron Lee, Cam Burrows, Chris Worley and Joshua Perry as guys who have played well.

+ Meyer said it was a bad day for the quarterbacks, but that's expected in the spring. He said Cardale Jones is clearly number two behind Braxton Miller right now.

+ The offense won Saturday's scrimmage.

+ Meyer said he sees improvement on defense in the areas that they are emphasizing, i.e. being quicker to the ball.

+ Meyer said the offense as a whole had a pretty bad day, including left tackle Taylor Decker. It was a very windy day in Columbus. But he said that players who allow peripheral stuff to affect them will have trouble succeeding. He said Joey Bosa got the best of Decker today.

+ Meyer said he'll have former Mount Union coach Larry Kehres speak to the team soon, and they also plan on honoring Paul Brown as they honor past and present coaches from "the great state of Ohio". He also mentioned that he's excited about his own son playing high school football soon in Ohio.

+ He said they are doing something called "Unit Leadership". He said his coaches have gone on leadership seminars once or twice a week, and then they'll pass that down to their players. "We're not broke, we just didn't finish The Chase."

+ Meyer said the number of injuries isn't unusual, but he feels bad for Jalin Marshall because he was really making a move.

+ Meyer said that Nick Vannett is one of the most improved players on the team. He has played well in place of Jeff Heuerman at tight end. He also said Marcus Baugh is playing well as well.
