Bennett, Bosa on Chuck Bednarik Award Watch List
By Tony Gerdeman

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Half of Ohio State's starting defensive line was named to the Chuck Bednarik Award Watch List on Monday, as sophomore defensive end Joey Bosa and defensive tackle Michael Bennett each earned the preseason honor.

Begun in 1995, the award is presented annually by the Maxwell Football Club and is awarded to the College Defensive Player of the Year.

Bennett has appeared on many preseason All-American lists this summer, and his appearance on this watch list is not a surprise. Last season he anchored the Buckeye defensive line with 42 tackles, seven sacks and 11.5 tackles for loss. He earned Second-Team All-Big Ten honors in 2013 as well.

Bosa burst onto the scene last year as a freshman, surprising everybody with his production. He finished with 44 tackles, 7.5 sacks and 13.5 tackles for loss. He started 10 games as a true freshman.

The Buckeyes' lone 2013 First-Team All-Big Ten defensive member who returns in 2014 is defensive end Noah Spence, and he would almost certainly be on this list if he didn't still have two games left of a three-game suspension due to a positive drug test from last season.

No Ohio State player has ever won the award.

Semifinalists for the Bednarik Award will be announced November 3, 2014, while the three finalists for the award will be unveiled November 24, 2014.

The winners of the 2013 Bednarik Award will be announced as part of the Home Depot College Football Awards Show held on December 11, 2014. The formal presentations of this award will be made at the Maxwell Football Club Awards Gala hosted by Revel Casino Hotel Atlantic City on March 6, 2015.

The watch list candidates have been chosen by the Maxwell Football Club's selection committee, which analyzes both past performance and future potential. The Club reserves the right to make additions and deletions to these lists as the 2014 season unfolds. All members of the Maxwell Football Club, NCAA sports information directors, FBS head coaches and selected national media are eligible to vote for the awards.
