Buckeyes Garner League Honors
By John Porentas

Ohio State Head Coach Jim Foster has been named the Coach of the Year in the Big Ten for the third consecutive year and OSU center Jessica Davenport has been named the Player of the Year in the Big Ten, also for the third consecutive season.

Foster guided Ohio State to its third-consecutive Big Ten championship this season. His team have compiled a record of 44-4 for a winning percentage of .916 over the past three seasons. The Buckeyes compiled a record of 15-1 in Big Ten play this season and overall record of 26-2.

Davenport is the first player in Big Ten history to be named player of the year three consecutive seasons. She was a consensus selection by both the coaches and the media.

Davenport is the Big Ten’s overall leading scorer for the second season in a row at 19.4 points a game. She also ranks No. 2 in the league in rebounds at 9.7 per contest. Earlier this year, Davenport became the Big Ten’s top career shot blocker and has reached 379 rejections for her career to rank seventh all-time in the NCAA. She also is the first Big Ten player to amass more than 2,000 points, 1,000 rebounds and 300 blocks in career.

Davenport’s classmate Brandie Hoskins also was honored by the league for the third time. The Dayton, Ohio, native was voted first team by the conference’s media contingent and earned second-team honors in the coaches’ vote. Until suffering a season-ending injury Feb. 8 at Minnesota, Hoskins was having an outstanding senior campaign, averaging more than 14 points a game and leading the conference in assists at nearly five per outing. Davenport joined Hoskins on the media’s first team and was named first-team by the coaches as well. She also was named to the league’s all-defensive team.

Star Allen, who along with Davenport hails from Columbus Independence High School, was deemed a second-team performer by the media and was an honorable mention selection by the coaches. She has upped her scoring average from 2.8 last season to 10.4 through 28 games in 2006-07 and leads the Big Ten in shooting percentage at .644 (125-194).

Marscilla Packer, a junior guard for the Buckeyes, earned all-league honors for the second year. She was voted third-team by both the coaches and media. Packer, from Pickerington, Ohio, is the Buckeyes’ top outside shooting threat and is posting more than 10 points a game this season. She was a second-team selection by the coaches and media last season.
