Two-Minute Drill: Matta Gets Pay Bump
By Brandon Castel

COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Ohio State University announced Monday that the Board of Trustees will vote on a pay bump for basketball coach Thad Matta next week.

Matta, who is in his ninth season in Columbus, is signed through 2019 but now he will make a little bit more cash every year.

Contract Details

* New revisions won’t add any additional years to Matta’s contract, which ends in 2019, but it bumps his pay from $2.9M to $3.2M.

* The new revisions to Matta's contract were completed in December but won't be approved until Board of Trustees meeting next week.

* Matta's new contract includes academic bonus for team performance and a car stipend (rather than car program which has been discontinued).

* Matta has stricter compliance responsibilities in new contract, but he said “all the things in there are things I live by anyway.”

Gene Smith Talks Contract

* OSU AD Gene Smith highlighting the fact OSU basketball APR has improved from 911 to 972 under Matta's leadership.

* Smith said he is committed to paying Ohio State's basketball coach like a top 10 coach in the country. "That keeps changing."

* Smith expects Schottenstein Center renovations should be done within four months. Spring target date.

* Smith pointed out the fact every time Thad Matta wins a B1G title he gets another year on his contract. "He's won five of them."

* Smith said they're always cognizant of Matta's backs problems. Increased flight hours 15-20 hours per year to make travel more comfortable.

Matta and Players

* Matta: "One of the things I'm most proud of is what we've built here since we started. We were at ground zero nine years ago."

* Matta: "I feel as blessed as I can be to be at Ohio State. I love this University and feel extremely grateful."

* Matta said the extra 15-20 hours of private jet time is more about efficiency in recruiting than his back problems.

* Aaron Craft on Matta: "He's the definition of a player's coach. He gives us a lot of freedom a lot of other guys don't have."

* Deshaun Thomas said Matta taught him right from wrong and told him to be patient when he first got to OSU.
