Two-Minute Drill: Matta, Players Ready for Long Beach State
By Brandon Castel

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio State head coach Thad Matta met with the media on Thursday to discuss the team’s upcoming game with Long Beach State on Saturday (noon ET, Big Ten Network)

The Buckeyes haven’t played since last Saturday against Northern Kentucky, but Matta has liked what he’s seen from his team since their loss at Duke last week. Here’s what he had to say on Thursday, along with senior Evan Ravenel and junior Aaron Craft.

Shooting Problems

* Craft: "We put in too much work to be missing the kind of shots we're getting. We need to knock down some shots."

* Craft admits he has been overthinking his shot at times. "I'm a thinker, whether it's on or off the court."

* Matta said he doesn't know if there's a guy in college basketball who has shot the ball in practice more than Craft.

* Matta on Craft: "When I would watch him play at Liberty-Benton, he was a scorer. That was his mentality."

Defense Matters

* Craft said at times the struggles with scoring have affected them at the defensive end of the floor.

* Matta still trying to get these guys to understand how long and athletic they are, how it can make a difference on D.

* Evan Ravenel said the coaches challenged him and Amir to play better at the defensive end and on the glass.

Getting the Most from Q

* Ravenel said LaQuinton Ross is one of the most talented offensive players he's ever played. Just has to learn to bring it every night.

* Matta said Ross is making strides at the defensive end. Starting to understand concepts and communication.

* Matta said part of the reason LaQuinton played as many minutes as he did is the big lead. They slid him over to Deshaun's spot.

* Matta said the key for LaQuinton is "staying locked in" on every possession. Has a tendency to float in and out.

* Matta told Q over the summer that with his mentality, he will have 20 one night and 0 the next, but that's a matter of maturity.
