Buckeyes Ranked No. 7 in Final AP Poll
By Brandon Castel

CHICAGO — Ohio State will head into the postseason as a 2-seed in the West Region of the NCAA Tournament this week.

They were the eighth and final 2-seed in the bracket behind Miami, Duke and Georgetown, but the Buckeyes officially finished No. 7 in the final AP Top 25 Poll for the 2012-13 basketball season.

They were behind all four No. 1 seeds in the tournament, with Gonzaga taking the top overall spot in the final AP Poll on Monday. The Zags are the No. 1 seed in Ohio State’s West Region, and those two teams could meet in the Elite Eight for a chance to play in Atlanta as part of this year’s Final Four.

The only other 2-seed behind the Buckeyes in the final poll was Georgetown, a team that finished 25-6 this season but lost to 5-seed Syracuse in the semifinals of the Big East Tournament in New York over the weekend.

The second-seeded Buckeyes captured the Big Ten Tournament title for the third time in four years under head coach Thad Matta. They knocked off 4-seed Wisconsin, 50-43, on Sunday afternoon to take home the title in Chicago.

The Badgers moved up four spots to No. 18 overall in the final AP Poll. They were one of five Big Ten programs in the final poll, including four in the top 10. Indiana, winner of the Big Ten’s regular season championship, slipped from No. 3 to No. 4 in the final rankings, while Ohio State climbed from No. 10 up to seventh overall in the rankings.

The Buckeyes came in two spots ahead of Michigan State, who slipped from eighth to ninth after its loss to OSU in the semifinals of the Big Ten Tournament. Michigan rounded out the list at No. 10 overall. The Wolverines had been ranked No. 6 heading into the conference tournament over the weekend, but they were bounced by Wisconsin in the quarterfinals after struggling to get by Penn State in the opening round.
