Loaded Schedule Awaits Matta in Ninth Season
By Brandon Castel

COLUMBUS — Thad Matta likes coaching in big games, which might explain where there are a bunch of them on the schedule as he heads into his ninth season as the head basketball coach at Ohio State.

The Buckeyes, who are coming off a Final Four run a year ago, will open the 2012-13 season against Marquette on Nov. 9 as a part of the Carrier Classic, which will take place on the deck of the U.S.S. Yorktown down in Charleston, S.C.

Ohio State will also face Duke, Long Beach State, Winthrop and Kansas in a loaded nonconference schedule before they open Big Ten play against Nebraska on Jan. 2 in Columbus.

“Our team has been hard at work since our appearance in the Final Four last March,” Matta said on Thursday as the Big Ten released its official schedule for the upcoming season.

“I like the mix of veteran and underclassmen on our roster. They will be challenged throughout the year as we prepare for Big Ten competition. Our league will be extraordinary once again and our team will be tested both in our non-conference and conference schedule.”

The Buckeyes, who earned a share of the 2012 Big Ten regular-season title a season ago with a 13-5 league mark, aim for their sixth league crown under Matta's direction. They will play at least 14 games this season vs. 10 teams that played in the 2012 NCAA Tournament with seven of those games taking place away from Columbus.

Matta and the Buckeyes will travel to Durham, N.C. on Nov. 28 for a rematch with coach Mike Krzyzewski and the Duke Blue Devils (9:30 p.m. ET, ESPN) at Cameron Indoor Stadium. They welcome LBS to Columbus on Dec. 8 and Winthrop on Dec. 18 before their primetime rematch with the Kansas Jayhawks on De. 22 in Columbus.

It is their second-to-last nonconference game before they open Big Ten play with Nebraska in Columbus on Jan. 2. They follow that with trips to Illinois and Purdue before welcoming the hated Michigan Wolverines to Columbus on Jan. 13.

Ohio State’s conference schedule includes a home-and-home with Michigan, Michigan State, Illinois, Wisconsin and Indiana. They play Purdue only once in West Lafayette on Jan. 8.

It will be part of their toughest stretch of the conference schedule. They play at Illinois, at Purdue, home for Michigan and at Michigan State during a two-week span in January. They go to Ann Arbor in early February and welcome Indiana, one of the top-ranked teams in the country this year, to Columbus on Feb. 10.

Their return trip to Bloomington will come on March 5, the second-to-last game of the regular season. They close out the year with Illinois at home on March 10.

After five season in Indianapolis, the annual Big Ten tournament will be staged at the United Center in Chicago for the first time since 2007. The 2013 event will open March 14 with the champion crowned March 17. Ohio State has appeared in the title game in each of the last four seasons and six times overall with Matta on the Ohio State sidelines.
