Matta Adds Pair of Walk-ons for 2012-13
By Brandon Castel

COLUMBUS, Ohio — There will be a few new faces, and numbers, over on the Ohio State bench this season.

Along with scholarship freshman Amedeo Della Valle, who will wear No. 33 for the Buckeyes this year, OSU head coach Thad Matta has also added a pair of walk-ons to the roster for the 2012-13 season.

Ohio State announced the addition of Elyria native Jake Lorbach and Andrew Goldstein, a New Jersey native, to the Buckeyes’ roster this week. Lorbach is a sophomore who will wear No. 34 for the Buckeyes, while Goldstein is a junior who will be in No. 2 this season.

A 6-3, 200-pound shooting guard from Marlboro, N.J., Goldstein played for Marlboro High School, where he became the Mustangs’ second-leading scorer in history with 1,069 career points. He averaged 18 points, five rebounds and three assists during his prep career.

He helped his prep team to the school’s furthest run in the New Jersey state playoffs as a senior in 2010. After high school, Goldstein played a season at Brookdale Community College, where he served as a team captain before transferring to Ohio State.

Goldstein also won a gold medal at the Pan-American Maccabi Games in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Lorbach is a 6-7, 210-pound forward from Elyria, Ohio. He played for St. Edward High School in Lakewood, where he lettered four times in basketball and twice in volleyball.

As a senior (2011), Lorbach helped St. Edward to the 2011 Ohio High School Boys Volleyball Championship. In basketball, Lorbach was part of two OHSAA “Sweet 16” appearances and one “Elite 8.” He averaged six points, eight rebounds and three assists as a senior with the Eagles.

The addition of Lorbach and Goldstein gives Matta and the Buckeyes 13 players on the roster for the 2012-13 season, including 10 returners from last year’s Final Four squad. Former walk-on Alex Rogers earned a scholarship prior to the start of Fall Semester at Ohio State, making the two newcomers the only walk-ons on the current roster.

Ohio State currently has one senior, Evan Ravenel, five juniors, six sophomores and one freshman.
