Men's Basketball
Morgan State Post-game Comments
By Rob Ogden

Ohio State kicked off the 2013-14 season with a 89-50 win over Morgan State. Five different Buckeyes score in double figures. After the game, coach Thad Matta and a few players met with the media. Here are the highlights.

Thad Matta Updates

* Matta said he liked the offensive balance the team showed with five different players in double figures.

* He said that balance is something they "have to have."

* Matta said Shannon Scott's shot was a big point of emphasis for him this past offseason. He said Scott got 400 shots up one day during the summer.

* Asked if he was more pleased with Scott's 16 points or LaQuinton Ross' 11 rebounds, Matta said "both."

* Matta said he questioned where the rebounds would come from.

* Matta said he talked to Sam Thompson on Sunday and told him he was playing the best basketball he's ever played.

* He said Scott routinely takes 100 3-point attempts in practice now.

Shannon Scott Updates

* Scott said he's been working on his shot a lot this year. He said his teammates did a great job of finding him open.

* Scott said the fact that he made his first-career start didn't really matter to him.

* He said he didn't take his shot seriously last year. Now, he said, he's in the gym every day getting up shots.

* Scott said they became lackadaisical at times on defense in the second half. He said they had that problem on Sunday against Walsh, as well, and added that it's something that needs to be fixed.

* He said the fact that they have such great offensive balance makes them a tough team to guard.

* He said he didn't come into the game thinking he would take a bunch of 3-pointers, but rather just took what the defense gave him.

LaQuinton Ross Updates

* Ross said it's nice to have a lot of different guys that can knock down open shots when they need to.

* He said he didn't think about getting his first career start. All he cares about, he said, is that they got the win.

* Ross said he was worked a lot on not turning the ball over as much he did last season. He didn't have a single turnover Saturday. He said a lot of his turnover problems could be traced back to his footwork.

* Ross said it felt good to grab 11 rebounds for his first-career double-double. He said that's an aspect of his game he's been working on heavily.

* He said his right hand, which was in a cast all last week, is feeling much better. Ross said he bent it up against someone during their scrimmage against West Virginia.

Lenzelle Smith Jr. Updates

* Smith said the defense is what makes the offense tick. He said their ability to get fast-break points is going to be a big part of their offense.

* He said Sam Thompson has embraced his role as the sixth man. Smith said Thompson adds an incredible amount of energy when he's on the floor.

* When asked who would win a game of Pig between Aaron Craft and his sister Cait, Smith said Aaron won the last one they played, so that's all that matters. "You're only as good as your last game," he said.

Todd Bozeman Updates

*Bozeman opened his post-game press conference by saying, "Ouch. That's all I gotta say."

* Bozeman said he was impressed with the way the Buckeyes shot the ball with confidence.

* When asked about Craft's defense, he jokingly said he didn't see the new hand-check rules in effect.

* Bozeman said he thought Ross would take on the scoring role of DeShaun Thomas, but added that Ohio State is a dangerous team when it can spread the ball around as much as it did Saturday. "If they do that, they'll be tough," he said.

* Asked what his team got out of the game, Bozeman responded, "You want me to tell how much the guarantee was?"

* When asked how much is was, he said, "It was a lot. It was a whole lot."
