Buckeyes Will Host Maryland in 15th B1G/ACC Challenge
By Brandon Castel

COLUMBUS, Ohio — It’s not exactly Duke or North Carolina, but Ohio State has drawn an intriguing matchup in the 15th annual Big Ten/ACC Challenge.

This year’s event, highlighted by eight teams in the ESPN.com early preseason top 25, will take place Dec. 3-4. It will feature a number of high profile matchups: No. 9 Michigan at No. 5 Duke, No. 11 North Carolina at No. 3 Michigan State and No. 20 Indiana at No. 8 Syracuse.

The Buckeyes, ranked No. 6 in the ESPN preseason top 25 poll, will host a Maryland team on Dec. 4 that is preparing to join the Big Ten next season.

“We are looking forward to having the University of Maryland on our campus this year in the Challenge,” OSU head coach Thad Matta said in a statement on Wednesday.

“The game will give fans of both programs a glimpse at what the series will look like when the Terrapins join the Big Ten in 2014-15.”

Ohio State and Maryland have met five times previously; with Ohio State owning a narrow 3-2 series lead. The teams first met at Maryland Dec. 29, 1935, a 50-41 Terrapin victory. Ohio State knocked off Maryland on the road in the 1980 National Invitation Tournament, 79-72.

The teams played a neutral site game in 1983, an Ohio State win in East Rutherford, N.J., before splitting a home-and-home series in 1984 and 1985. Ohio State has not been ranked nationally in the five previous meeting.

Maryland has lost both times it was ranked, a 72-68 defeated while ranked No. 8 in 1983 and a 78-66 loss as the No. 19 team in Columbus in 1985. Thad Matta is 0-1 vs. Maryland. While at Xavier, Matta's Musketeers fell 77-64 to No. 17 Maryland in the second round of the 2003 NCAA Tournament in Nashville, Tenn.

Ohio State is participating in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge for the 12th-consecutive year and has a 5-6 record in the event. The Buckeyes first participated in the Challenge during the 2002-03 season against Duke in Greensboro, N.C., a 91-75 Blue Devils' victory.

Ohio State defeated Virginia Tech in Columbus in 2005-06, 69-59, for its first Challenge victory. The game vs. Duke in Columbus in 2011 pitted the highest combined ranking of Ohio State (2) and an opponent (No. 3 Duke) in the Buckeyes' previous Challenge games.

The 2012 game at Duke pitted the No. 4 Buckeyes vs. the No. 2 Blue Devils. Ohio State has been among the Top 15 teams nationally in each of the last four Challenge games (3-1 record). The Buckeyes are 3-2 in home Challenge games.

All 12 Big Ten teams and 12 of the 15 ACC teams will participate in the 2013 Challenge, including the three newest ACC members Notre Dame, Pittsburgh and Syracuse. Clemson, Virginia Tech and Wake Forest will not play in the 2013 event.

The ACC and Big Ten split last year’s Challenge with six wins each. In the event of a tie, the Commissioner’s Cup remains with the conference that won the previous year, which was the Big Ten in 2011. The ACC holds a 10-3-1 Challenge record, winning the first 10 events (1999-2008) while the Big Ten won the next three (2009-2011).

ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPNU will combine to televise all 12 games of the two-day event matching top college basketball programs playing for conference supremacy and the Commissioners Cup. All 12 games will also be available via WatchESPN.
