OSU Athletics
Ravenel, Stoneburner Among Ohio State’s Graduates Sunday
By Brandon Castel

COLUMBUS, Ohio — On Saturday, Evan Ravenel scored 12 points and grabbed seven rebounds for the Buckeyes in an 18-point victory over visiting UNC-Asheville. On Sunday, Ravenel was back at Value City Arena, but not for anything basketball related.

Instead, Ravenel was one of 33 current and former Ohio State student-athletes who received a degree from the University during Autumn Commencement on Sunday afternoon in Columbus.

The graduates represent 20 sports and include NCAA and Big Ten champions, all-conference players and academic standouts. Ravenel was the only player from Thad Matta’s team to receive his degree Sunday – which makes sense because he is the only senior on the roster – but Jake Stoneburner also headlined the list of OSU football graduates.

A fifth-year senior out of Dublin Coffman, Stoneburner was one of six players from the current Buckeye football team to receive his degree during the first Autumn Commencement since Ohio State switched from quarters to semesters.

Both Ravenel and Stoneburner graduated with degrees in Family Resource Management, while Pickerington Central product Jamie Wood received his Communications degree from Ohio State on Sunday.

Other graduates from the undefeated 12-0 football team included defensive back Vincent Petrella (Middle Childhood Education), receiver Taylor Rice (Human Development and Family Studies), quarterback Justin Siems (Aviation) and linebacker Stewart Smith (Biology).

Highlighting the rest of the graduates was Christina Manning from the women’s track and field team. A criminology major, she was the 2012 Suzy Favor Big Ten Female Athlete of the Year, a two-time NCAA champion, an 11-time All-American and 10-time Big Ten champion.

The Big Ten indoor and outdoor athlete of the year, she won the NCAA 60 meter hurdles (indoor) and 100 meter hurdles (outdoor) as a senior and ended her career with four Ohio State individual and two relay records.

Men’s volleyball player Mik Berzins, a forestry fisheries and wildlife graduate, was a member of the Buckeyes’ 2011 NCAA Championship squad, the first national title in program history. He set the Ohio State career digs record in 2012 and finished with 902, ranking second at Ohio State in career digs average at 2.23. He was a 2012 Volleyball Magazine Third Team All-American and First Team All-MIVA honoree and a 2009 Second Team All-MIVA selection.

Women’s golfer Rachel Rohanna is graduating a semester early with her degree in agribusiness. A two-time first team All-Big Ten selection, she reached Stage II of LPGA Qualifying in October and competed as an amateur in the 2011 U.S. Women’s Open. Rohanna, who plans to pursue a career as a professional golfer, was a three-time Ohio State Scholar-Athlete.

Former field hockey captain Jenn Sciulli, a speech and hearing science major, was a first team All-American and Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year in 2011 and was a part of the first NCAA semifinal team in program history during the 2010 season.
