Anzalone Planning Another Ohio State Visit?
By Brandon Castel
COLUMBUS, Ohio — When Alex Anzalone revoked his verbal commitment to Ohio State back in May, many Buckeye fans were hoping it would the last time they heard his name.
They were wrong, at least about their new head football coach.
Not only did Urban Meyer refuse to write Anzalone off, even after his very public de-commitment from Ohio State more than a month ago, he actually upped his efforts in attempt to land the 4-star linebacker out of Pennsylvania.
Meyer and his staff have remained in constant contact with Anzalone, letting him know that he still has a place in Columbus whenever he makes up his mind. OSU defensive coordinator Luke Fickell even made a trip to Wyomissing recently to watch Anzalone work out.
It hasn’t been lost on the 6-3, 220-pound linebacker, who surprisingly plans to make a return to visit to Columbus, according to his hometown newspaper.
“I just want to stop by and see if I'm still interested,” Anzalone told the Reading Eagle this week.
That doesn’t exactly sound like he is planning another commitment on this trip, but right now Anzalone is slowing down the process so he has a chance to look at all his options. That was something he mistakenly failed to do early in the process, which is why his on-the-spot commitment to Ohio State did not hold up.
“You could say it was an emotional commit,” Anzalone said of his initial decision to play for the Buckeyes.
“In April, I got worn out with the process. I just wanted to get it over with.”
In a matter of a few months, Anzalone went from a relatively unknown prospect in Western Pennsylvania to one of the hottest names in recruiting. He shot up the rankings, all the way to No. 7 at outside linebacker according to Rivals.com.
Suddenly, Anzalone was feeling the love from a lot of different directions, not just Columbus.
“Then I had some doubts,” he said.
“Slowing it down helped me make sure it was 100 percent my decision.”
Anzalone took a visit to Meyer’s old school, the University of Florida, in the spring, and he plans a return visit to Gainesville on June 17 for a one-day camp. The Gators, along with the Buckeyes, are among the six finalists for Anzalone’s services.
The other four schools include Notre Dame, Penn State, Stanford and USC. Anzalone plans to narrow his list to three schools before scheduling official campus visits to each during the season.
According to the Reading Eagle, he is heading to South Bend, Ind., today to get a first look at the Notre Dame campus and is considering a return visit to Columbus on the way home later in the week.
Anzalone does not plan to make another commitment until late in the fall, after he has had a chance to take all of his official visits. Until then, expect Meyer and his staff to continue recruiting him.
