Football Recruiting
Lee Helping to Build Ohio State’s 2013 Class
By Michael Chung

Going toe-to-toe with 4-star Georgia safety Vonn Bell, New Albany’s Darron Lee impressed the coaches so much during his camp visit in June that he gained an Ohio State offer and committed shortly after.

He is currently quarterbacking his high school team this season but will likely play in the defensive backfield for the Scarlet and Gray. Urban Meyer loves recruiting quarterbacks to play defensive back – remember Joe Haden, one of his best defensive backs at University of Florida, was also a high school quarterback.

Standing 6-3 and 205 pounds, Lee will be listed as an ATH when he comes to Ohio State. He has been a leader ever since his commitment and will likely come to many OSU football games this year to help assemble the 2013 and 2014 recruiting classes.

Darron recently took time to answer questions to help Buckeye fans get to know him better. You can start by following him on Twitter @DLeeMG8.

Ozone: Is there anyone on the current Buckeye football team that you are close too?

Lee: Nathan Williams. I see him the most out of all the Buckeyes.

Ozone: What is your assessment of Urban Meyer so far?

Lee: No need to assess him. I already know what he brings to the table and what type of coach he is. He brings out the best in all his players and is the ultimate competitor.

Ozone: Why did you choose not to make a big deal out of your commitment?

Lee: Because that's not the type of person I am. I like to remain quiet and just work hard and don't need to make everything a game like most of these diva athletes do. I'm the kind of guy that knows what he wants and I won’t second-guess it. Personally I believe some athletes nowadays think they are movie stars. I have not made it yet; therefore it’s not a big deal.

Ozone: What was FNL (Friday Night Lights) like?

LEE: Really good experience, I did not participate, I was just there to watch and help recruit uncommitted players. I talked to 2014 recruits as well as 2013 commits Evan Lisle, Joey Bosa and Billy Price. I also got to hang out with the coaches, which I have not done since I committed.

Ozone: Who impressed you the most at FNL?

LEE: Shelton Gibson ! He blew everyone out of the water. Watching him against the corners, he was next to unstoppable. No one could go against him, his acceleration was unbelievable as he gets off the ball fast and no one could cover him. He is a huge threat.

Zach Yousey (WR, Columbus Harvest Prep) was also impressive. He is underrated and should get a good look from major programs.

Ozone: You were impressive at the June OSU camp. Many said you were right there with Vonn Bell during drills. How did you fair against Vonn and did you feel you were equal if not better than he during drills?

LEE: Tough to judge, we have two different body types. I am bigger and stockier. Vonn is an extremely good athlete but I would not say someone is better and did better than I did. He is immensely talented but I felt that I held my own against him.

O-zone: How do you think Vonn Bell would do against Shelton Gibson?

LEE: Vonn is fast and would definitely hold his own against Shelton. I saw no one at FNL that compares with Vonn as far as talent.

O-zone: What do you think are OSU’s chances of landing Vonn Bell?

LEE: Honestly, I am not sure but he would be a great addition to our class and complete our defense. I think it will be a tough battle against the SEC schools as the tops of the SEC are in on Vonn. We are still in the hunt and made his final list. I am in his ear, calling him, texting him, trying my best to convince him to choose Ohio State but having friends who are attending SEC schools now, it is going to be a battle.

Ozone: Who else have you been working on to recruit to OSU?

LEE: I have not been as active for other players as I have been towards Vonn, but I talked to Raekwon McMillan and Dante Booker at FNL. I think there is a good chance they chose Ohio State. Raekwon, like Vonn, has many offers from SEC schools so we will be in a battle for him. I also talked to Thaddeus Snodgrass at FNL and encouraged him to join us at OSU. No one else since FNL, the season has started.

Ozone: What position will you play at OSU?

LEE: Not sure but it will be on the defensive side of the ball. I am coming into to OSU as an ATH but I have been told that defense is where I will play.

Ozone Quick Hitters with Darron Lee:

What will your major be? Business and Accounting, I am really good at Math.

Hobbies? Hanging with friends, reading books, listening to music and working out.

Food? My mom’s cooking, she is an amazing cook. She usually cooks Southern style food like greens but anything she cooks, I love.

Do you think you will have fellow players over to your house for meals? Hopefully, I'll have some over! Mom will probably cook some Southern Home cooking! (Word to Joey Bosa!!)

What are the most people she has cooked for? Probably the whole family during Thanksgiving (greatest meal ever btw).
