Football Recruiting
LB Davonte James: One to Watch for 2014
By Michael Chung

(Editor’s Note: This is the latest contribution to the-Ozone for Michael Chung. He has provided OSU recruiting information to several websites in the past, but now will be exclusive to the-Ozone as we look to bring more football recruiting coverage in the coming months. You can follow him on Twitter @MChungOzone).

Do you remember Michigan’s “Fab Five?” You know, the guys who turned out to be anything other than fabulous? With no championships and laying the foundation for Michigan basketball sanctions, their legacy has been marred.

But they did leave one indelible contribution to the sports world. Since Chris Webber and Jalen Rose first graced the hardwood in Ann Arbor, many groups have been referred to as the Fab Five (or in some cases four) – most recently the United States women’s gymnastics team.

Ohio State also has such a group in the 2014 linebacker recruiting class. What many may someday dub as the ‘Fab Four’ – Raekwon McMillan, Dante Booker, Clifton Garrett and Davonte James – are all linebackers coveted by major college programs.

The-Ozone already had a chance to interview one of the Fab Four in Georgia product Raekwon McMillan, but now another member – Davonte James – took some of his time to answer some questions.

James has been compared to a former Springfield linebacker, Trey DePriest. The 6-3, 220-pound linebacker had 52 tackles and an interception as a sophomore last season at Springfield and many are anticipating a breakout junior season for him this fall.

Ozone: You are listed as an inside LB, is that your best position?

James: I can play any LB position. My mind is really good at math, so I am able to pick up schemes pretty easily. I can play wherever the coaches want me too.

Ozone: You said you are good at math, is that your favorite subject?

James: It is and there is a good chance I will major in it when I get to college.

Ozone: What are the Ohio State coaches saying to you in regards to an offer?

James: I have not talked to the coaches in a while but we will try to stay in touch. They told me to keep on working hard. I am hoping to have a really good season so that I can get an OSU offer.

Ozone: If you received an OSU offer, would that mean you would automatically commit to them?

James: I do not think I would commit on the spot. I would need to see what other offers I receive and take my time to think it through.

Ozone: Your teammate, WR Thaddeus Snodgrass, received an OSU offer; do you have any idea where he is leaning?

James: I talked to him recently and asked him that question. He really does not have a clear favorite right now or even a top 3. I am not sure if he would be leaning towards Ohio State.

Ozone Quick Hitters with Davonte James:
Hobbies? Watching film, watching TV, chillin’ with friends.
What are you looking for in a school? Good academics, the feel for what the program is like and how I fit into it.
Favorite sports team? St. Louis Rams, I grew up idolizing Marshall Faulk.

*Thank you Davonte. We look forward to follow your junior and senior season and hope you make the best choice for your education.
