Football Recruiting

2014 5-Star Has Buckeyes on Top
By Michael Chung

(Editor’s Note: This is the latest contribution to the-Ozone for Michael Chung. He has provided OSU recruiting information to several websites in the past, but now will be exclusive to the-Ozone as we look to bring more football recruiting coverage in the coming months. You can follow him on Twitter @MChungOzone).

Recruiting is changing.

National Signing Day for the 2013 class is still half a year away but recruiting junkies – including Urban Meyer – are already turning their focus to the class of 2014.

One star in the 2014 class is Raekwon McMillan, a linebacker out of Hinesville, Ga. who 247 Sports has already rated as the No. 14 prospect in the nation and a 5-star recruit for next year’s class.

He attended Ohio State’s Friday Night Lights camp last month and already has the Buckeyes high on his list. He has offers from almost every top school in the nation including Alabama, Auburn, Florida, USC, Texas and Notre Dame.

At 6-3 and 236 pounds, McMillan is already physical enough to compete at a major college program. He is busy with both recruiting and football but recently took some time to answer questions from the-Ozone.

Ozone: Almost every top school in the nation including all the powerhouse schools in the SEC have offered you scholarships; which schools are standing out to you now?

McMillan: My top four schools, and these are in order of preference: 1. Ohio State, 2. Georgia, 3. Clemson, and 4. Alabama.

Ozone: How is Ohio State recruiting you?

McMillan: I talk to coach Meyer two times a week on the phone. Mark Pantoni also helps me stay connected with coach (Luke) Fickell and coach (Mike) Vrabel. I have a good amount of contact with OSU.

Ozone: When will you select a school?

McMillan: My decision will be at the 2014 Under Armour All-American All-Star Game.

Ozone: Is it important for you to stay close to home and play so your parents and friends can watch you?

McMillan: My parents are not pushing me to stay home and they would be fine if I played further away. It is not important to me to play close to home; I feel I need to branch out so playing further away would be good. My parents will travel to wherever I play to watch me.

Ozone: If you had to make a school selection today, this very minute, which school would you give your verbal commitment too?

McMillan: Ohio State, but it is still a long way away before the Under Armour All-Star Game.

Ozone: You mentioned Georgia is your No.2, what is Mark Richt like and compare him to Urban Meyer?

McMillan: My high school coach went to Georgia and knows coach Richt. He is a very strong Christian man who cares a lot. Comparing him to coach Meyer? Two totally different coaches. Coach Meyer is more involved with his staff, involved in the coaching and X’s and O’s. Coach Richt is more hands off, like an overseer.

Ozone: Who have been the close friends you have made during the recruiting process?

McMillan: Nick Glass, Drew Barker, Clifton Garrett, and Dante Booker have been my closest friends.

Ozone: Dante Booker is from Ohio, what do you two talk about?

McMillan: We have talked about going to school together. It would be great to play football on the same team. He has an Ohio State offer and I think his top two are Ohio State and Auburn.

Ozone: So if Dante committed to Auburn, would that mean you would too?

McMillan: No, I am not going to Auburn. I do not want to be behind Reuben Foster. I want to be at a school where he is not, so if Dante goes to Auburn, as of now, it is without me.

Ozone: You mentioned Nick Glass as another close friend. He is committed to Georgia, how would that sway your decision in the end?

McMillan: Nick and I are close but he has not signed yet and I think he is open to other schools even though he has verballed to Georgia. It has no bearing on my college choice.  I believe he has an Ohio State offer but I do not think he is considering them seriously.

Ozone: You may have broken your finger in a game, how’s it feeling now and how it will affect your season?

McMillan: I think I broke it in a game as I am having a hard time moving it and it hurts a lot. It will not affect my season, as I will play through the pain.

Ozone: Tell me what your favorite food is and your hobbies?

McMillan: I like to eat seafood and my hobby is working out. I work out all the time.

Ozone: What is your favorite sports team?

McMillan: New England Patriots. I knew of Mike Vrabel from when he played with them but his tenure with the Pats has no bearing on me signing with Ohio State.

*Thanks to Raekwon for his time and we wish him the best during this recruiting process.
