Football Recruiting
Illinois Star the Next Great Ohio State Corner?
By Michael Chung

The name Parrker already has super hero undertones.

Of course Peter Parker was the famous character behind Spiderman’s secret identity, but this Parrker has no secrets, he is flat out super, at least when it comes to the game football.

Ohio State has a rich tradition at cornerback. Names like Antoine Winfield, Malcolm Jenkins, Shawn Springs and Nate Clements come to mind, and that’s just in the last 15-20 years. The Buckeyes consistently produce cornerbacks that are highly coveted by the NFL, and Bradley Roby appears to be the next name on that list.

For the 2014 season, the coaches will continue to search for the next lockdown shutdown corner and they could find one in Parrker Westphal.

The 6-1, 185-pound defensive back from Bolingbrook, Ill. has not one but two Ohio State coaches – Kerry Coombs and Mike Vrabel – hot on his trail. With the need for some added depth at DB, prospects like Westphal will be paramount for Urban Meyer in the 2014 class.

Westphal already has offers from top tier schools like Michigan, Florida, Nebraska and Notre Dame in addition to the Buckeyes. He recently took some time to update The-Ozone on his recruitment.

Ozone: When did you receive the OSU offer?

Westphal: I think April or May. My coach told me; I was working out and he texted me that OSU offered. I was excited, it was right after West Virginia, Michigan and Iowa offered.

Ozone: Which coaches have you talked to at OSU?

Westphal: I talk to Vrabel and Coombs. I talk to coach Vrabel the most. Being able to talk to him is an honor because he has won Super Bowls and is a great guy. We talk about the season, school and grades. I talk to coach Vrabel every two weeks. I talk to coach Coombs about the same. Coach Coombs is hyper. He keeps it short and tells me he wants to coach me bad; one intense dude.

Ozone: What are your top 5 schools?

Westphal: I do not have one yet.

Ozone: Do you have a leader or a school that intrigues you?

Westphal: No leader.

Ozone: How was your visit for the Michigan game?

Westphal: The visit was great! A wonderful experience of the Michigan-Ohio State rivalry. The crowd was intense and the people were everywhere. The overall atmosphere was amazing. I talked to both coach Vrabel and Coombs after the game in the locker room. I do not think they got the memo that I was coming because they were both shocked and excited to see me.

Ozone: When do you think you will visit OSU again?

Westphal: I will have an official next year.

Ozone: Does the fact that OSU has so many cornerbacks in the NFL make OSU more attractive?

Westphal: Yeah, knowing the ability to go pro makes OSU more attractive.
