It should come as no surprise that Ohio State has been very active in recruiting running backs. They landed Bri’onte Dunn and Warren Ball in the class of 2012 and Ezekiel Elliott is already on board for 2013.
With college recruiting coming at an ever faster clip than ever before, the Buckeyes have already offered five running backs for 2014, and one of those offers has gone to North Carolina tailback Derrell Scott .
At 5-11, 180 pounds, Scott also holds offers from North Carolina, Florida State, Tennessee, South Carolina and Virginia Tech – to name a few. He has a 3.8 GPA, reportedly runs a 4.42 in the 40-yard-dash with a vertical leap of 31 inches.
Many more offers are sure to follow for the back out of Havelock, N.C., but Ohio State has gotten much more involved in recruiting that area of the country since Urban Meyer added co-defensive coordinator Everett Withers to his staff.
Scott was already quite familiar with Meyer himself, calling him a “legend” from his coaching days at the University of Florida. We recently caught up with him to talk about Ohio State and his recruitment thus far.
Ozone: When did OSU offer you?
Scott: Maybe three months ago. Coach Withers told me about the offer and said that I can come and play at Ohio State. I was really shocked and surprised because I never felt Ohio State would offer and did not see it coming so soon.
Ozone: How many running backs will they take in 2014?
Scott: He never got into detail. They could take more than one for the 2014 class.
Ozone: What do you think about the running back situation now at OSU?
Scott: If I decide to go there, I will work hard for playing time and not really worry about who is there. Whoever is already there will not hinder me.
Ozone: What offers do you have?
Scott: East Carolina, UNC, South Carolina, Duke, NC State, Tennessee, Va. Tech., Florida State, Louisiana Lafayette.
Ozone: What are your top schools?
Scott: No favorite now, everyone is in the picture.
Ozone Who is your favorite college football team?
Scott: I grew up liking Florida because of Tim Tebow, Urban Meyer, Percy Harvin. Urban Meyer is a legend and he knows what it takes to get players to the NFL. But everything is still even with other schools.
Ozone: What can you tell us about Everett Withers?
Scott: He is a cool guy. I talked to him a few months ago and we keep in touch and he asks how things are. He is really cool guy.
Ozone: Which running backs are you most like?
Scott: Reading blocks, Marcus Lattimore, I have speed like Jeff Demps, I have power, and can run through someone but can also make people miss. DeAnthony Thomas, he has speed and can make you miss, also Trent Richardson as far as power and getting tough yards.
Ozone: What is your fastest time in the 40?
Ozone: Which schools are recruiting you the hardest?
Scott: South Carolina and Ohio State. SC shows me a lot of love from their fans on Twitter, great atmosphere, great people. Fans and coaches care about me. Coach Sands (Everette Sands) shows me a lot of love. OSU, they message me and ask how I am doing.
Ozone: What are some schools you hope to receive offers from?
Scott: Oregon, Alabama, Texas – bigger schools – USC. Alabama has sent me questionnaires as well as Texas and A&M and Auburn.
