Men's Basketball Recruiting
2013 SG Adds Ohio State to List

By Brandon Castel

Ohio State coach Thad Matta could use a few more shooters on his 2013 team, and apparently some players are taking notice.

Matta and the Buckeyes are hosting Henderson (Nev.) Findlay Prep combo guard Amedeo Della Valle this weekend, but another new name has emerged for the class of 2013.

Shooting guard Allerik Freeman, a 5-star prospect according to Scout.com, has expanded his list of potential schools to include Ohio State, along with Duke and UCLA, according to ZagsBlog.com, a part of SportsNet New York.

“Like most kids he had a change of heart and added UCLA and Ohio State,” Freeman’s high school coach, Ty Baumgardner, told SNY.tv on Wednesday.

The 6-4, 210-pound combo guard out of Virginia is currently playing for Baumgardner at Olympic High School in Charlotte, N.C. He had narrowed his list to just Kansas and Villanova back in March, but has now received upwards of 30 scholarship offers.

Freeman, a five-star prospect, is ranked No. 19 overall in the 2013 class by Scout, and No. 25 overall by Rivals.com. According to one scout, he is “a quick and strong guard” who plays with a high level of physicality.

He is also said to have an excellent first step, a scoring mindset and a streaky jumper from the perimeter. He can play point guard, but would obviously be looking at a position off the ball at Ohio State, where the Buckeyes return point guards Aaron Craft and Shannon Scott.

Along with Della Valle, the Buckeyes are also reportedly hosting potential transfers Rodney Hood (Mississippi State) and Anthony Gill (South Carolina) this weekend.

With the early, albeit expected, departure of Jared Sullinger, and the transfers of Jordan Sibert and J.D. Weatherspoon, the Buckeyes are looking to add more depth to their 2013 roster. It currently sits at nine scholarship players with one walk-on who sat out last season.
