What To Watch For: National Signing Day 2013
By Brandon Castel
National Signing Day is like Christmas, only bigger. At least for some people.
There are many normal Americans who will go about their business today, unaware of the mass hysteria happening just around the corner, or at the cubical across from them.
Maybe you’re one of those people – you know, the guy who didn’t sleep well last night because he was thinking about Vonn Bell and Ezekiel Elliott and whether he could fit in the same backfield with Carlos Hyde or Dontre Wilson.
If so, here is a quick rundown of What to Watch for on National Signing Day 2013. Enjoy. It only comes once a year.
*7 AM – Middletown QB/WR Jalin Marshall was one of the first to commit in the class of 2013 and he will get things started for the Buckeyes on NSD. The 4-star prospect will play wideout/slotback for Urban Meyer and he is expected to be one of the first to fax his signatures to Columbus.
*9 AM – Florida WR James Clark will announce his college decision at New Smyrna Beach High School just south of Daytona Beach. He is picking between OSU, Florida and Clemson. While many have projected him to the Gators over the last few weeks, there is some reason to believe he could surprise people by picking the Buckeyes.
*10 AM – There will be two important commitments happening at 10 a.m. ET Wednesday. The first is 5-star safety Vonn Bell, who is picking between OSU, Alabama and Tennessee on ESPN. Bell is reportedly leaning towards the Buckeyes or Vols, but it’s still basically a toss-up at this point.
The other commitment to watch is 3-star WR Taivon Jacobs. He has been committed to OSU since July, but told the Washington Post this week he is strongly considering a flip to in-state Maryland.
*2 PM – Another Ohio State commit will hold his Signing Day ceremony at 2 p.m. ET. That’s when 4-star LB Trey Johnson is expected to fax his Letter of Intent to Columbus. Johnson is still committed to the Buckeyes, but he did take an unexpected trip to Tennessee last month. Auburn, Georgia Tech and Florida have also been recruiting him hard.
*3 PM – Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer will meet with the media in Columbus to talk about the 2013 class. This will be our first chance to ask him specific questions about these guys, so long as they have already faxed their letters of intent to the coaches. It should be interesting to hear what Meyer has to say about guys like Marshall and Dontre Wilson on offense, as well as Joey Bosa and Mike Mitchell on defense. We should also get a chance to talk to a few of Meyer’s assistants as well.
*5 PM – The final piece of the puzzle for Meyer and the Buckeyes is 4-star RB Ezekiel Elliott. This is another OSU commit who could make an 11th hour decision to flip to his home state school. Elliott’s dad Stacey played football at Missouri and Zeke recently took an official to Columbia. He could have ended the suspense, but instead he will make everyone wait until the last minute to find out if he’s sticking with his OSU pledge.
