Buckeyes Get Commitment From Nation's Top Shooting Guard
By Tony Gerdeman

D'Angelo Russell, the #1-ranked 2014 shooting guard in the nation according to Scout, committed to the Buckeyes Friday evening per numerous reports.

Russell is a six-foot-four 180-pound guard from Montverde Academy in Montverde, Florida. He committed to the Buckeyes over offers from Indiana, Michigan State, North Carolina, Arizona, Memphis and Louisville.

"I didn’t go through the process of cutting my list, but I built a good relationship with them [Ohio State]," he told SNY.tv. "Honestly, if anybody was closest to them it was probably Michigan State."

Russell is the 11th-ranked player in the nation per Scout. 247 Sports has him rated as the #39 player in the nation. He is the 22nd-ranked player in the nation per Rivals, and #24 in the nation per ESPN.

"Just the environment pretty much turned me on," he said of Ohio State.

"I have a really good relationship with the coaching staff and I really feel like this was the best opportunity to be the best that I could be, and I feel like today was a really good day to decide."

Coming off a visit to Columbus last weekend, he obviously saw all that he needed to see.

"I evaluated their situation and felt it was best for me," he told ESPN.com

"I decided to go to Ohio State because of the environment of the program, the coaching staff and the players I will be playing with, such as Keita Bates-Diop."

Russell is the second five-star commit for Thad Matta in the 2014 class, joining Bates-Diop (Normal, IL). According to 247 Sports, Ohio State now has the second-ranked class in the nation, and is still in the fight for the nation's top player, Jahlil Okafor.

"I feel I can help the coaches landing a big man," he told ESPN.com, regarding Okafor. "I understand them and know how to play with them."

Ohio State's 2014 recruiting class now stands at four commitments with room for one more, assuming nobody leaves the program early after the 2013 season.
