Buckeyes Finally Offer Another 2014 Quarterback
By Tony Gerdeman
Urban Meyer extended a scholarship offer to Desert Mountain (Scottsdale, AZ) quarterback Kyle Allen (6-2 192) on Wednesday, marking just the second offer the Buckeyes have made to a 2014 quarterback.
Allen broke the news on Twitter Wednesday afternoon.
Offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Tom Herman attended Desert Mountain's spring practice on Tuesday, and obviously came away seeing exactly what he wanted. One day later, Allen received one of the offers that he had been hoping for.
Desert Mountain head coach Tony Tabor relayed Wednesday's conversation with Urban Meyer to AZCentral.com.
"He said he watched film on him 30 different times. They don’t just pull the trigger."
The staff had been keeping all of their eggs in the Deshaun Watson basket, who is a Clemson commitment. Last month, Watson said that he still planned to visit Ohio State this summer, but that went away last week when he said that he was done with recruiting and would not be taking any further visits.
While it's likely that the staff will stay in contact with Watson, it appears that they have finally decided to move on and find a new basket for their eggs. As of right now, that basket belongs to Kyle Allen.
Allen is a five-star prospect according to Scout, and their #1 quarterback overall in the 2014 class. He has offers from Ohio State, Notre Dame, Texas A&M, UCLA, North Carolina, and both Arizona schools, among others.
While not a runner per se, he excels at keeping plays alive in the backfield. His film shows tremendous timing and touch, but it's been the camps and the workouts where he has been able to showcase his arm strength.
He was named the top quarterback at the SoCal Nike Football Training Camp in March. It was after that performance that Scout named him their top quarterback in the nation. The rest of the services aren't far behind: 247 Sports has him #5; Rivals has him #4; and ESPN ranks him #5.
Last season he threw for 3,200 yards and 36 touchdowns with just seven interceptions.
Allen is also the teammate of Mark Andrews, a 6-foot-6, 238-pound receiver/tight end. Both have Ohio State offers, and the Buckeyes would love to land both. This new offer to Allen certainly won't hurt their chances.
Allen is expected to make his decision this summer and possibly enroll in the winter. Ohio State will certainly be in the mix throughout.
