Jamarco Jones Joins the Buckeyes
By Michael Chung
Urban Meyer made offensive line a high priority for 2014 and may have added his biggest piece yet. After securing commitments from Marcelys Jones and Kyle Trout, Meyer reeled in another big fish in Jamarco Jones. In February, Meyer said in regards to recruiting the OL: “We're going to have four starters walk out the doors next year this time . . . And we're not prepared for that. So that's area number one. And 1A, 1B, 1C is offensive linemen for next year.”
The final three were the Buckeyes, Michigan, and Michigan State but Jones chose Ohio State over other schools like Florida, Ole Miss, Notre Dame, Nebraska, Tennessee, UCLA, and Wisconsin. He spoke to Ozone back in February and one could already tell that he had Ohio State interest. You can read his interview here.
Jones told Ozone back in February “Ohio State has a great coaching staff that I have got to know pretty well. They are all great coaches and offer a great chance for me to become a better player and person. I can also receive a great education there as well.”
Standing 6’ 5” 285 lbs. Jones is rated as a four-star prospect by Rivals, Scout, ESPN, and 247Sports. He was a starter on the varsity teams his sophomore and junior years and will hope to break in on the OSU line come Fall 2014.
With four offensive linemen graduating, there has never been such a golden time for an incoming freshman to receive playing time on the OL. A few players that had significant minutes during their freshmen year were: Mike Brewster, Rob Simms, Nick Mangold, Alex Boone, Mike Adams, and Orlando Pace. All of these linemen were drafted in the NFL and five of them are still playing while Pace is on the highway to the Hall of Fame.
Jones earlier won the overall MVP of the Core 6 Athletes Showcase in Cincinnati. His favorite food is fried fish and spaghetti and his best subject in school was AP History according to his Ozone interview.
Doug Lesmerises writes, “Jones is ranked as the No. 97 overall recruit in the nation by Rivals.com. Only two of the Buckeyes' current pledges for the Class of 2014 are ranked higher: defensive back Damon Webb at No. 35 and defensive end Jalyn Holmes at No. 48.” Lesmerises goes on to write, “A 6-foot-5, 285-pounder, Jones is ranked as the No. 13 offensive lineman for 2014 by Rivals.”
The Buckeyes hope to add at least two more and are targeting players like Chad Mavety, Jermaine Eluemunor, Damian Prince, Alex Bookser, Demetrius Knox, Donell Stanley, Roderick Johnson, Avery Gennesy, and Natrell Curtis. Though still not complete, adding Jones was a must get for the Buckeyes and their 2014 class.
