Lone Star State Locked and Loaded to Lose Lockhart
By Michael Chung and Craig Henman
At 6’4” 250 lbs. DL prospect James Lockhart is on the Buckeye radar with an Ohio State offer. The Buckeyes have been visiting the Lone Star state a lot these days getting players like JT Barrett, Dontre Wilson, and Demetrius Knox, to name a few. They are nowhere from finished and continue to scour the Lone Star State for football talent.
Urban Meyer would love to add Lockhart to his class. GP of Scout.com writes, “A strong defender, who shows a high acumen for tracking down ball carriers in the open field, which shows his athleticism and pursuit skills right away on film. He is really good against the run. He is not your long, rangy style of defensive linemen, but rather more of the stout type. He is strong at the point of attack using his hands well to maneuver and control offensive linemen. Would not rule out growth to a DT.”
Urban Meyer loves the defensive line and believes it is the key to a championship run so receiving an OSU offer is no easy task. Lockhart was thrilled to receive the offer and gave the-Ozone readers a Texas sized interview.
Ozone: How did you hear about your OSU offer?
Talked with one of the recruiting coaches—Mark Pantoni— and he gave me a coach’s number. I was told that OSU is very interested in me and they are recruiting Texas hard.
Ozone: What thoughts were going through your head after OSU offered you? Crazy, besides my Texas A&M offer, this is my biggest out of anyone.
Ozone: How did you find out about your ND offer? What did ND tell you?
I had contact with one of assistant coaches. They said I am one of the elite players and are very interested in me. They said if I want early playing time, ND is the school for them.
Ozone: Do you have a top 5? Texas, Texas A &M, Ohio State, TCU, and Oklahoma, not in any particular order. I am still learning about ND.
Ozone: Tell me what Mack Brown is like? He is great, I really like him. He treats me and my family great and is active in my life. He checks up on me, making sure I am OK; every time I am in Austin he treats me well and has me close by.
Ozone: Would you eliminate Texas if Mack were fired? Possibility depends who the next coach would be. I have heard rumors of Art Briles from Baylor, he has offered others and me have said Nick Saban. I hear Mack makes more money so if Nick is interested in more money he should come to Texas but I do not see Saban leaving the SEC and he only needs to ask and he will receive more money. Alabama has not offered but they are evaluating me.
Ozone: It’s been noted that Urban Meyer is bringing the SEC skill guys with speed and talent to Ohio. He is currently looking for beasts up front on both sides of the ball. Does that appeal to you at all or would you rather just play in the SEC?
I like to hear that about coach Meyer. I like the SEC. It’s the best college football and if Urban Meyer is bringing that to the table, then that interests me. An SEC offer and an OSU offer would be about equal. SEC is the best college football. To me, they are bigger, faster, and stronger. It boils down if I’m going to be able to touch the field.
Ozone: What do you do enjoy doing in your spare time?
I like to work out just to stay in shape for football season.
Ozone: What/who has been your biggest motivation throughout your life?
My family. They really started motivating me when I was younger. My dad was a really good high school football player and I’ve always looked up to him. I use my family as motivation because someday I want to be able to help them out.
Ozone: What’s on your iPod right now?
A lot of rap.
Ozone: Do you enjoy the limelight or would you rather fly under the radar?
The fame doesn’t really mean that much to me, but at the same time I want my name out. If my name is out there then college coaches will know about me and recruit me. I need my name out there.
Ozone: Favorite Friday night plans outside of football season?
I like to stay home and play PS3.
Ozone: What is something most people do not know about you?
My struggles. My family has had some financial issues. My dream is to make it to the league and help my family out.
Ozone: Favorite Food?
Ozone: Favorite TV Show?
Ozone: Favorite subject in school?
Ozone: What degree do you expect to pursue in college?
Haven’t really decided. It will probably be between sport management and kinesiology.
Ozone: What will be the number one reason or thing you value most when selecting a university to play for?
Playing time. I’d like to at least be in the rotation during my freshman year. Is the team winning? How do I fit in?
Ozone: Favorite athlete?
Ozone: Who is the athlete that you most resemble?
Ozone: What career do you plan to pursue other than the NFL?
High school football coach
Ozone: Do you have any pre-game rituals?
I like to stretch and listen to my football playlist on my phone. If I have time, I call my dad or granddad and they tell me what to do. Then I say a prayer before stepping out on the field.
Ozone: Have you ever had a chance to visit the Ohio State campus?
A: No sir.
Ozone: Is location going to be a factor when choosing a school?
No, just playing time. I want to get on the field early.
