Talking to Terry Who Has SPARQed Buckeye Nation
By Michael Chung
Terry McLaurin was not on the radar in the recruiting world but became the 13th member of the Ohio State recruiting class. Even coach Meyer only knew of Terry just two weeks before they would meet for the first time at camp.
After McLaurin committed, there was some concerns due to his 3-Star rating by recruiting services and his list of offers, which did not have the likes of Alabama, Michigan, LSU, or Notre Dame on it.
But McLaurin is on the map big time now after his performance at the SPARQ competition in The Opening, a Nike football camp. McLaurin finished second to Speedy Noil, scoring a very respectable 149.88. Last year’s SPARQ champion was current OSU LB Mike Mitchell whose SPARQ score was 154.47.
McLaurin finished with a 4.4 40-yard dash, 44.8" vertical, 4.07 shuttle run and a 42' power toss. He took some time to talk to Ozone before he left for The Opening.
Ozone: Tell me about how you received your offer?
A: I went to a camp around June 9 and worked out. I unofficially visited the day before. While the other campers were eating lunch, Stephen Collier and I worked out for Meyer and showed him what we could do. I did really well at the camp and spent some time with coach Meyer afterwards in his office. Meyer told me straightforward that he really did not know me and that he first heard of me two weeks ago and that he wanted to take time to get to know those he recruits. He said he wanted to see me in two weeks for another workout and two weeks later I came back, worked-out and then they offered me.
Ozone: What did coach Meyer say to you your first time in his office?
A: He said he loved my speed and that I was one of the fastest kids he has seen, but I had to work on things like locating the ball quicker, catching the ball more clean, and to come out of my cuts quicker to better channel my speed so I can stop on a dime and have separation from someone who is covering me.
Ozone: How did you feel after your first meeting with coach Meyer?
A: I felt fine but I was hoping to receive an offer and felt that I had performed well enough in camp to get one but they wanted me back in a few weeks so I knew I had a chance at an offer.
Ozone: What did you do for those two weeks?
A: Since coach Meyer wanted to see me in two weeks I really worked hard to improve. I was catching 200 balls a day, had my dad, mom, and coaches throw me passes. I easily caught over 1000 balls from June 9 to the 21st. I wanted to show the coaches my desire to play, improve, and that I could compete with the best of them.
Ozone: We know you were offered two weeks later but tell us what happened before the offer?
A: When I came back to OSU two weeks later I felt ready. Throughout the whole time, coach Meyer was praising me for the improvement that I made. At the end, we went into coach Meyer’s office and with my family present, he offered me a scholarship. Meyer also gave me a vision of how much I could improve after one year, and then four years based on my vast improvement in just two weeks. But after the offer, coach gave me more things to work on and I will get at it.
Ozone: Urban Meyer said you were one of the fastest people he has seen, what is your fastest 40 time?
A: My fastest time electronically was 4.43 at the Nike camp (Terry ran 4.4 at The Opening). I want to improve on this at The Opening (which he did) and my goal is to be the top man at the SPARQ competition (he finished second to Speedy Noil).
