Football Recruiting
Christmas Comes Early for the Buckeyes
By Michael Chung

Have you ever asked your parents for a present and got what you asked for on Christmas day? What was the gift? Though you were expecting it, was receiving the present still exciting? Such is the case of Raekwon McMillan. For over a year, McMillan has had Ohio State at or near the top. In an Ozone interview, McMillan listed his top 4 as: 1. Ohio State, 2. Georgia, 3. Clemson, and 4. Alabama. This list stayed pretty consistent through out his recruitment with 2-4 exchanging places at times but Ohio State was always at or tied for the lead.

For months and months, the-Ozone has had him on the “Predicting the Finish” list and now his name can be removed to the commitment list. At 6’3” 235 this 2014 LB out of Hinesville, GA has the body of a linebacker but the physical attributes of a DB and will be loads to deal with on defense. With LB having been a sore spot in the defense for some years and Ryan Shazier possibly foregoing his senior season to enter the NFL draft, getting Raekwon’s 5-star commitment was imperative.

He was originally going to announce at the Under Armour All Star game but wanted to enroll early to get a head start for the next season and could be challenging for playing time his freshman season.

McMillan had five hats—OSU, Clemson, Alabama, Auburn, and Georgia—and picked the Buckeyes despite a little trickery. One who was not tricked was Urban Meyer as Raekwon called the coach before he picked the OSU hat. Christmas came early for Urban Meyer.

Chad Simmons of Scout.com writes that McMillan “has been a linebacker talked about since between his freshman and sophomore year. He is a big kid with a great frame and he is very strong. He is a good striker at linebacker and he can bring that thump when he makes a play. His biggest strength is attacking the ball downhill. He can still improve on his play side to side and his ability to drop back into pass coverage. He is a perfect inside backer that attacks.”

Bud Elliot of SBNation writes, “McMillan attacks downhill in a hurry and really gets after the ball carrier. He is adept at quickly reading the play and shooting through the gap before the blocker has a chance to get after him. McMillan is clearly very strong, both in taking on blocks and in exploding through the ball carrier. He brings his legs on contact and gets his man on the ground. . . . McMillan is going to be a dominant starter as a middle linebacker who attacks downhill, and should be so with a quickness. He reminds me some of Reuben Foster and Jeff Luc -- former middle linebacker prospects who were close to their physical peak in high school. Anything else is just gravy.”

The Buckeyes are going to have a Merry Christmas this year thanks to Raekwon.

An early Christmas may not be over for Ohio State as Johnnie Dixon is suppose to announce later this week and many believe he will go OSU too.

Regardless of where Dixon decides, OSU received a “must get” prospect in Raekwon McMillan and will have a very Merry Christmas.
