Football Recruiting
Kentucky Kicker Becomes Number Ten in 2014 Class
By Michael Chung with contributions from Tony Gerdeman

Urban Meyer truly does not leave any stone unturned. Not only does he hit SEC country hard for recruits, his vision is global.

After going down under to Australia to nab punter Cameron Johnston, Meyer nabbed another kicker with international origins—Sean Nuernberger—who has roots in Germany, but currently resides in the great Bluegrass state of Kentucky.

The past few days were perhaps the biggest in Nuernberger's life. On Saturday he traveled to Tuscaloosa to kick for Alabama, and on Monday he was in Columbus doing the same for the Buckeyes. Obviously, the Ohio State coaches were impressed.

An All-State performer, Nuernberger stands six-foot-two and  weighs 220 pounds, and though he is big in size, apparently his kicking leg is bigger.

The Louisville Courier-Journal states, “the junior showcased a big leg, making 7 of 12 field-goal tries with a long of 46 yards. The native of Germany made 29 of 32 extra points and put 38 of 44 kickoffs in the end zone for touchbacks. He averaged 43.2 yards per punt, with a long of 63.”

Nuernberger’s coach Matt Brown told the Louisville Courier-Journal that Sean “has a monster leg. … We feel like we can kick the ball from wherever we want to on the field. ... It booms off his foot.”

With Drew Basil graduating this year and Johnny Townsend making a last-hour change to the University of Florida, OSU’s special teams were in a dire predicament.

At one time it was thought that Basil would be handling both kicking and punting this coming season, but with Johnston coming in from Australia, and now Nuernberger pledging for 2014, the OSU special teams are in much better shape.

As a side note, the last kicker from Kentucky to play for OSU was Aaron Pettrey, out of Raceland. Pettrey went on to have a taste of the NFL with the Carolina Panthers, Detroit Lions and Cincinnati Bengals (replacing injured and fellow Buckeye Mike Nugent). He is currently kicking for the Cleveland Gladiators of the Arena Football League.

Nuernberger's commitment puts the 2014 recruiting class at about half of its capacity.
