Football Recruiting
Get to Know Ohio State's 10th Recruit for 2014
By Michael Chung

When you think of Ohio State, many great players at various positions come to mind. Some may call it "Linebacker U" with names like Marcus Marek, Tom Cousineau, Chris Spielman, Pepper Johnson, AJ Hawk, James Laurinaitis, and Brian Rolle dotting the landscape.

What about NFL corners? There are names like Antoine Winfield, Shawn Springs, Chris Gamble, Malcolm Jenkins. But for the most part, kickers are not the first ones fans talk about.

Under Jim Tressel, special teams, and specifically the kicking game, has been a huge priority. Names like Mike Nugent, Josh Huston, and Aaron Pettrey are some recent stars. Drew Basil has been doing an outstanding job and enters his final year of eligibility.

Urban Meyer places equal value on the kicking game as Tressel did. Hence, placekicker at Ohio State has become essential. Enter Sean Nuernberger. Out of nowhere, Nuernberger became the tenth verbal commit of the 2014 class.

An All-State kicker, Nuernberger connected 7 of 12 field goal attempts last season, with a long of 46 yards. He also made 29 of his 32 extra points, and sent 38 of his 44 kickoffs into the endzone. He also averaged 43.2 yards per punt, with a long of 63 yards.

I had a chance to interview Sean and give Buckeye nation an inside look into their new kicker.

Ozone: When did you receive your offer?

Nuernberger: I got the offer today (June 11) and committed on the spot. OSU is where I have wanted to go to for a while so I decided not to wait. I talked to Coach Coombs a few weeks ago and they told me that they needed someone to kick. I and a few other guys came out to OSU to workout. I worked out on June 10 and again this morning (June 11). I talked to coach Coombs for an hour afterward and also coach Meyer. Coach Meyer is the one who offered and I accepted immediately.

Ozone: You have kicked a 46-yard field goal in a game, what is the longest you have hit in practice?

Nuernberger: I hit a 70 yarder once with the wind, I have hit 65 yards a few times without the wind.

Ozone: Will you only be a placekicker in College?

Nuernberger: I will do mostly placekicking and kickoffs in college but I love to punt too. I would not mind being the punter as well, but I know they brought in a punter from Australia. I do not want to just sit back and watch. I want to continue working on my punting and would be happy if I could win the punting job along with kicking.

Ozone: Whom have you met so far?

Nuernberger: I met Drew Basil and a few others. A lot of the 2014 class has reached out to me either by phone, text or twitter. People like Damon Webb, Kyle Trout, Kyle Berger etc. I am really excited to get to know them better. We have talked about meeting up on campus to hang out. I also want to help recruiting and bring the best athletes we can to OSU.

Ozone: Which kicker to you model yourself after?

Nuernberger: David Akers! I have followed him wherever he has played, whether it is the Philadelphia Eagles or the 49ers (now with the Detroit Lions). He has perfect form and I have studied his film over and over and over again. He lives in Louisville so I hope to meet up with him and learn how to kick better.

Quick Hitters:

Favorite Food: Schnitzel, I grew up in Germany
Favorite Movie: Coach Carter
Favorite TV Show? Do not really watch TV other than ESPN.
Favorite Sports Team? Dallas Mavericks, my dad played on the German national team with Dirk Nowitzki.
College Major? I want to go Pre-Med and eventually be a neurosurgeon.

Sean speaks fluent German so Dankeschön! We look forward to following you. Herzlichen Glückwunsch und Viel Glück! Ich wünsche Ihnen Gesundheit und Freude!
