Random Thoughts from the Recruiting Trail, Aug 8
By Michael Chung
It looks like Chad Mavety was OSU coaches’ target all along. Eluemunor was planning to commit the week after his OSU visit but it may have been the case that OSU wanted to wait on Mavety and Eluemunor would not wait, visiting the Hogs and later pledging to Bret Bielema.
Eluemunor said that OSU recruited him hard after he pledged to UCLA but sources say that Eluemunor has not been in contact with OSU or vice versa since his commitment to Arkansas.
It was reported that Urban Meyer has officially taken over OT Chad Mavety’s recruitment. What does this look like? Meyer is talking to Mavety a lot but Mavety says that coach Ed Warinner and he talk almost daily as well.
Mavety has stated he does not have a top 5 but it looks like the race will be between the Buckeyes, Alabama, and Florida State. Says he talks to Urban Meyer more than the other 2 head coaches but “not by much.”
NJ WR Noah Brown has tweeted that he has received offers from UNC, VT, Rutgers, ND, Mich. St., and Vandy but no OSU. It looks like Brown maybe another victim of the scholarship reductions imposed on OSU from Tat-gate. Jonathan Hilliman was another NJ prospect that OSU was high on but due to scholarship restrictions, the Buckeyes were not able to offer Hilliman a committable offer and it looks like Noah Brown is in the same boat.
News on NJ TE/H-back prospect Mike Gesicki is that he was invited to the prestigious Army All American bowl in San Antonio. Austin Kemp of LGHL writes, “With Florida State, Miami, and Penn State all chasing the 6'5" athlete along with the Buckeyes, Gesicki should prove to be a nightmare for opposing defenses at the next level.”
A source mentioned to me that Gesicki wanted to commit but was asked to wait by Urban Meyer, similar to the Noah Brown situation. I am trying to reach Gesicki for an interview to try and confirm. If this report is true, then Gesicki is another victim of the dreaded scholarship limits that have affected the likes of Derrick Green, Jonathan Hilliman, Noah Brown, and now Gesicki. With FL speedster Johnnie Dixon scheduling an official visit for the Wisconsin game, the Buckeyes will have to be careful about doling out scholarship offers to ensure they have space for Dixon as well as Raekwon McMillan, Marshon Lattimore, Erick Smith, and Damian Prince.
Reports are that current OSU commit Parris Campbell could raise to a 5-star rating. This is scary because Campbell just turned 16 in July and will only be 16 on national signing day. One must be 18 or older to sign his own letter of intent so most likely his mother Shelley will be doing the signing. Campbell will have just turned 17 when he steps onto OSU as a student which means he would not have even reached his physical peak until his sophomore year.
Not only is Urban Meyer trying to pry Curtis Samuel out of NY but also another New Yorker from Brooklyn, DT Thomas Holley is fresh in Urban Meyer’s radar. Meyer is obsessed with the defensive line, believing it to be the most important aspect of a championship football team and would love to add Holley. Todderick Hunt of NJ.com writes, “In talking to him, I get a feeling that Ohio State and Penn State are doing very well here, and wouldn't be surprised if the Nittany Lions pull this off. But the Scarlet Knights, I feel, have an outside chance. But they have to get Holley on campus for an official visit to increase the odds.” Holley dazzled at the Nike camp: The Opening, earning him a fifth star from 247 Sports. With Urban Meyer’s lust for the DL, do not be surprised if he comes after Holley hard.
A journalist is only as good as his/her sources. A source this week told me that Mark Andrews, a WR prospect out of AZ had not eliminated OSU but a few days later Andrews pledged to Oklahoma and Bob Stoops; so much for that source. Many thought Andrews would follow his close friend Kyle Allen to TAMU but Andrews followed his heart and committed to the Sooners.
Everyone is awaiting the final decision of NY superstar ATH Curtis Samuel, someone Urban Meyer wants badly. He had a really good visit to Rutgers and came away somewhat divided but it looks good for Ohio State. Samuel has been described as a quiet kid so do not be surprised if he has already given a silent verbal to the Buckeyes but the coming days should clear things up.
the-Ozone interviewed another Texas prospect, DB Chris Hardeman who recently de-committed from LSU. He said it just did not feel right anymore. Damon Webb, Dante Booker, and Demetrius Knox have all tried to recruit Hardeman but it looks like their greatest competition will be the Arkansas fans. They are barraging Hardeman on twitter. LSU and Arkansas are rivals but SEC fans also smell talent and are trying to lure Hardeman to the Hogs.
